Asus G74 Series

Under the label „Republic of Gamers“ (R.O.G.) Asus continiues the story and shows off the G74 series for gamers. With a premium 17.3-inch display (optional: 3D-capable) and the latest Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs the Asus G74 reveled on the CeBIT 2011 Exhibition in Hannover, Germany. At this time Asus shows a early mock-up of the fourth generation. So the new series take over the succession of the previous series G71, G72 and G73. Strong Hardware, the overall weight and the big chassis are mobility-killers. For the most customers are these points only a marginal note.
Asus offers different configurations of the G74 series, which should appeal mainstream-users as well as extreme gamers. The entry in this series is not cheap, but competitors like Alienware are also located in this area. The cheapest model includes an Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, 8 GB of DDR3-RAM, 1.5 TB HDD, a Blu-ray drive and the gaming-GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M.
The available high-end model costs over 2.000 USD. Therefore the customer get a nimble Solid State Drive with 160 GB capacity (+ 750 GB HDD), 16 GB of DDR3-RAM and a matte 3D-screen (120 Hz). At Dells daughter Alienware the high-end notebooks are mostly a little bit more expensive than this series from Asus. Otherwise Alienware offers a wide range of configurations and additional options. E.g. various RAID-systems, which can be very expensive, but quite fast.
In our review oft he Asus G74SX-3DE the chassis, the comfortable keyboard, the excellent screen, including the 3D-functionality, the good performance, the load noise level and the low surface temperatures are some advantages of this notebook. On the other side: the noise in idle mode, hardware throttling under extreme load and the missing Nvidia Optimus support are disadvantages.

Read here, how the 3D gamer fares in comparison to its predecessor, G73, and the current competition.

If you're after a machine to play Battlefield 3, Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3, look no further. The Asus G74S is a mammoth gaming laptop, which has the power to play all the latest titles, and while you might not get as much for your money when compared with full form desktops, it's up there with the best.

Asus ROG laptops have been well received during the last years, mainly because they offered solid performances and a sturdy reliable body for an affordable price tag. Affordable for a gaming laptop of course, when compared to other devices from Alienware, Clevo or Sager. Yes, the Asus notebooks are for sure not the fastest, but for the average gaming enthusiast looking to dump their desktop units for a portable computer, they are just the thing to get.

The Asus G74SX-BBK7's performance in the gaming ring is impressive; it will play high-end games, but you'll have to be mindful of the settings. With the added benefit of WiMAX that will keep you connected to your online games, provided you're near an outlet and a metropolitan area and you are subscribed, this machine will satisfy most any gamer's needs. However, the Alienware M17X can play most of your high-end games on any setting without hiccups for $1,055 more. If you're more the value buyer, then the Asus G74SX-BBK7 will make an excellent companion, but if you have change to spare the M17X is the gaming laptop to get.

From the moment we unboxed the G74Sx it was clear that ASUS were aiming to outdo Alienware in the enthusiast laptop marketplace and we were off to a good start with solid feeling chassis, soft touch coating and some futuristic styling (though ASUS prefer Stealth Fighter comparisons).

This "mobile" gaming machine really does have everything you need for on-the-go power-computing, even though it weighs almost as much as a lightweight desktop. Asus packs a lot of power into the Asus G74SX, and the system has a fairly svelte body to boot. Now, if only we can get a review model that doesn't have a faulty LED backlight.

For a price of Rs.1,24,990, the Asus G74SX offers good value when you consider what you’re getting. A similarly spec’d Alienware would cost you about 30K more, so keeping that in mind, Asus offers better value for money. But they’ve still not rectified some basic problems that were present with the earlier models. The main issue is the lack of a physical toggle switch for the 3D mode. I want the choice to switch it on and off when I please, without having to run to the control panel every single time. Also, there’s no way to adjust the depth of the 3D effect while gaming. Finally, Asus gives you plenty of choices and configurations for all the components, leaving aside the most important one, the graphics card. The GTX 560M is a powerful card, no doubt, but it’s not enough for 3D, which is quite clear from the benchmarks. These are a few, but crucial areas, which stops the G74SX from being a clear winner.

After a season of wafer-thin ultrabooks and pocket-sized ultraportables, there's nothing quite like a giant desktop-replacement gaming rig. Asus has built a very nice sideline over the years with its gaming laptops, including the G74SX, which is a strong, if expensive, quad-core rig that works fine, but looks like it should cost less.

I must admit that the G73SW left me feeling a little underwhelmed; it was nearly the same as the G73JW, only with a Sandy Bridge CPU. Yes, Sandy Bridge is a noteworthy upgrade from Clarksfield, but we wanted more. The G74SX is the answer, bringing some minor and some not-so-minor updates to the G7 series.

With the G74SX-A2, ASUS has updated its desktop gaming notebook in all the right ways. While the changes to the chassis are subtle, the design feels fresh and is comfortable to use for long stretches. Inside, the SSD, quad-core CPU, and one of Nvidia's most powerful GPUs mean that gamers won't be wanting for performance, either. While we prefer the Alienware M17x because it offers even more muscle along with a multicolor, backlit keyboard, that system carriers a $690 premium when similarly configured. If you're looking for a full HD notebook that provides a stellar gaming experience for a reasonable price, the G74SX-A2 is the way to go.

The Asus G74SX is a decent and reasonably priced gaming notebook that will handle most games just fine. If you’re looking for something similar to Alienware styling but without the S$4k price tag, this might be a consideration but if not, there are definitely better choices out there.

The G74SX is part of the Asus Republic of Gamers (or RoG for the initiated) series. Like the G53SX, the Asus G74SX is a powerful machine and perfectly adapted to gaming use. Like the G53SX however, it lacks a Full HD panel and Blu-ray player and therefore only receives a four star rating.

Asus covers the G74Sx-A1 with a generous two-year parts-and-labor warranty that includes one year of accidental damage coverage and two-way free shipping for repairs. (Too often, we see just a year of coverage on what aspire to be premium laptops today. Plus, the extra coverage that Asus provides here is appreciated.) Also, toll-free technical support is available around the clock.

This hard-working powerhouse needs some powerful cooling-capability, and the Asus G74 features a unique vent design which sucks air form underneath the machine and then channels it out the back of the laptop, away from the user. The fan is not at all noisy. Under moderate usage conditions the battery lasted three and a half hours, which for such a large and powerful notebook is perfectly acceptable.

On Asus’ Web site, the company claims that this notebook can hit P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage--but we hit P2222 and P10012, respectively. It’s not often that lab-tested scores actually surpass what’s advertised. In terms of performance, we were a little surprised at how inconsistent the G74SX-A1 scored; sometimes it rocked the competition and other times it fell short.

If there is any problem, it’s the fact that the price of $1799 is high for a laptop which, despite a substantial redesign, is only marginally quicker than its predecessor. The comparable G73SW-XA1 model is available for $1399, and I’m not sure if the new model is currently worth $400 more. Certainly the whopping twelve gigabytes of RAM and massive 1.5 terabyte hard drive are impressive, but they do little to improve gaming performance.

As we mentioned earlier, the G74SX is a very competitively priced system. When we compare against other gaming laptops, the price is a strong selling point, currently under £1,600 on Amazon. At this price, it is hard to ignore as the overall build quality and component selection is first class. The screen and keyboard are two of the most important aspects when considering a purchase and the G74SX really doesn’t disappoint in that regard.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
