3D/2. With the laurels from the G73 series, Asus has managed to hit the bullseye for many gamers. Cool stealth-design with matte surfaces, quiet operating noise, and first class graphics power are definitely priorities. Now Asus is trying to follow in the footsteps of the success of its bigger brother, with a more compact 15 inch model.

If I were to spend almost a lakh on a gaming laptop, I would definitely get this one by paying 10 percent extra, mainly for the looks and performance. Also, the 3D gaming on this machine is way better on this one.

The lower screen resolution meant the Asus ROG G53JW-IX162V sailed through next generation 3D games. We'd love to see what this could do in 3D on a full HD screen because it romped in with over 40FPS on Call of Duty: Black Ops at 1366 x 768. We even got 52FPS with everything maxxed on 2D. Shame about the average 112 minutes battery life.

In summary, the Asus G53JW-IX162V offers excellent performance, though you'll pay for the privilege. It's very usable, thanks to the comfortable keyboard and trackpad, and it offers either excellent or utterly hideous design, depending on how you feel about laptops that are capable of eluding enemy radar. We're not bowled over, but we are satisfied.

Despite a few missteps along the way, the Asus G53Jw has enough notable strengths to make it a viable rival in the growing 3D laptop market. With its strong performance, striking Stealth Bomber design and comprehensive specification, you certainly get a lot for your money. However, the flawed screen and slightly limited usability prevent it from truly excelling and, if you can live without the 3D screen, there are plenty of far better rival multimedia and gaming laptops you could spend your money on.

For gamers who really must have it all, the Asus G53JW appears to have been sent from gaming heaven. Breathless i7 quad core processor speed, top flight Nvidia graphics capabilities and fully integrated 3D all conspire to make it a formidable, if pricey, beast. Overall, we’d rate the G53 is an extremely desirable piece of kit, with some minor caveats. It’s expensive, but if you want an all singing and dancing gaming transportable, then that price is justifiable. And naturally, your mates will just ooze envy at the sight of it.

The sin of the ASUS G53JW-3DE is price. Nvidia 3D Vision requires that a laptop have a unique, low-resolution 120Hz display and special glasses that enable the stereoscopic 3D effects. These options don’t come cheap and as a result the price of the 3DE model rises to a stratospheric $1799 while the entry-level ASUS G53JW-XA1 retails for just $1349.

On its own, the Asus G53Jw-3DE is a powerful 3D gaming notebook: You get a Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, 3D display, and Blu-ray for $1,769. Another good choice in this category is the HP Envy 17 3D, which not only has a larger, brighter, and higher-resolution screen, but performs just as well, weighs less, and costs nearly $100 less. Still, Nvidia's 3D Vision supports more games than ATI's technology, which powers the Envy, and you don't have to use special software to start playing. While some may want to wait for Asus to bring 3D to its 17-inch G73J, which has a 1080p display, the 15.6-inch G53Jw-3DE is a solid 3D notebook.

I have to give it to ASUS; the G53SW made a great first impression and continued to exceed my expectations on pretty much every front. Yes, the 1366×768 resolution is disappointing, but the 120Hz screen and impressive performance by the GTX 460m at full to high settings is equally impressive. All components inside are topnotch (especially the Sandy Bridge i7-2630QM) and the overall performance of the notebook is exceptional compared to other notebooks in a similar price range.

The G53SW is not perfect, however; the keyboard could use more support and the touchpad buttons need to be redone. Other than that, there is very little to complain about. The G53SW performs well in all the right areas, making it extremely easy to recommend.

The $1,449 ASUS G53SW-A1 offers a great combination of blazing-fast graphics, a gorgeous display, and rich audio. Our biggest issue is the keyboard, which not only has an undersized number bad but exhibits a lot of flex. You also have to think about the weight: 8.2 pounds is a lot to carry for a 15.6-inch notebook, especially when the 17-inch version of this ASUS laptop (the G73SW-A1) weighs just about half a pound more. Consumers looking for something more portable in this price range should check out the $1,399 Alienware M14x. And if you're looking for something a little more flashy, the MSI GT680R-008US offers nearly the same specs but flashier customizable lights for $1,449. But those who prefer the minimalist aesthetic of the ASUS G53SW will find a lot to like under the hood.

The Asus G53SX will please a very specific group of people, and disappoint others. Gamers looking for power in an inexpensive package may overlook the bulkiness and the poor audio quality (which headphones can quickly remedy). But the G53SX's ponderous weight and its inability to perform basic multimedia tasks, such as streaming a Netflix video, make it a poor fit for some other potential buyers.

All-in-all, ASUS' G53SX gaming notebook has impressed me a lot. If I were in the market for a "real" gaming notebook, I'd have no hesitation in choosing this one given what it offers at its price-point. ASUS continues to produce excellent all around gaming notebooks and the G53SX is no exception. It has fantastic performance, a great screen, sharp design, and even has decent battery life. One area that needs improvement is the keyboard; it has a poor feel with little tactile feedback. On the plus side it is backlit and has a separate numeric keypad. Something else to keep in mind with this notebook is that it is about as large and heavier than most 17.3-inch notebooks despite housing a 15.6-inch screen - travelers be warned.

One aspect that we haven’t mentioned yet is the price tag, and the G53SX offers extremely good value for money–the entry-level configurations (which are still equipped with a quad-core CPU, 8GB of RAM and the same GTX 560M) sell for less than $1,100 from some retailers. That’s the lowest price we’ve seen on a laptop with the GTX 560M.

For some gamers, a 17.3 inch screen might just be too big. If that's the case, the ASUS Republic of Gamers G53SX-A1 is a 15.6 inch gaming laptop that features robust components that are typical of ROG systems. However, the video card has a slower memory bus and no Blu-ray drive compared to the larger ASUS G74SX.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
