Asus Chromebook Flip CX5: 2-in-1 laptop with optional stylus input

Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 in review: 1,200 Euros for a Chromebook?
Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 in review: 1,200 Euros for a Chromebook?
The 2-in-1 Chromebook from Asus has a good hardware configuration, a backlit keyboard, and USB-C including Power Delivery. The IPS touchscreen display can be operated both with the fingers as well as with a stylus that can be purchased separately.

With the Chromebook Flip CX5, Asus has a 2-in-1 Chromebook in its product line. A Core i7-1165G7 quad-core processor (Tiger Lake), 16 GB of RAM (soldered, no memory slots), and a 512 GB NVMe SSD (M.2 2280, replaceable) equip the device for every imaginable application scenario involving a Chromebook. The model at hand would make a deep dent in your wallet with a price of just under 1,200 Euros (~$1,418). More affordable configurations are available starting at 599 Euros (~$708).

The system is stable and smooth. Chrome OS is loaded quickly, and applications are opened promptly. Thanks to the integration of the Google Play Store, countless Android apps are available for use on the Chromebook. An Intel WLAN module (AX201) that supports the fast ax standard enables Internet access. The noise and heat development of the actively cooled laptop are kept within limits.

The 15.6-inch Chromebook convertible has plenty of endurance. The 57 Wh battery is sufficient for a Wi-Fi runtime of just over 9 hours. As a result, the included USB-C power adapter (45 watts) shouldn't be needed during the day. The laptop can be powered via both USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2; Power Delivery, DisplayPort via USB-C).

The touchscreen display (Full HD, IPS) scores points with stable viewing angles, decent color reproduction, and good contrast. However, the brightness is too low. In addition, it has a glossy surface. A 1,200-Euro (~$1,418) device should do much better in this respect. The touchscreen can be operated with the fingers as well as with the separately available Asus Stylus Pen SA300 (starting at 55 Euros (~$65)).

Further information and many benchmark results are available in our review of the Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 CX5500FEA-E60012 (90NX0361-M00120).

What started as a side job during my computer science studies later became my main job: For more than 20 years now I have been working as an editor and author in the IT sector. While working in the print sector I also contributed to the creation of various loose-leaf publications and published original written pieces. I have been working for Notebookcheck since 2012.

I've been fascinated with technology ever since I got my very first Android smartphone, which was quite a while ago. The power packed into such a small footprint still amazes me. Learning to program made my understanding of technology deeper, and at the same time, it expanded my interest to the area of desktop computers and laptops. All this led me to enjoy reading and watching reviews of new devices, and that's how I stumbled upon Notebookcheck. I immediately found their reviews to be very comprehensive, and luckily, I've even had the chance of translating them since 2019. When it comes to the huge field of technology, I'm currently also interested in specializing in Java programming.
