Apple has announced watchOS 26 for Apple Watches with a new Liquid Glass interface design, several convenient features, and an AI-powered Workout Buddy. The OS is compatible with all Apple Watches released on or after 2020 (like this Apple Watch 10 on Amazon), with the exception of the Apple Watch SE (1st gen.).
Workout Buddy requires the Watch to be connected to an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone and Bluetooth headphones. During workouts, the Buddy provides encouragement to help users reach their goals while updating them with exercise statistics on parameters such as distance, heart rate, milestones, and pace. Achievement congratulations are provided after each workout. All speech is AI-generated with appropriate tone and energy in English for popular workouts, such as running, walking, and strength training.
The Workout app is redesigned for easy access to custom workouts, while Apple Music can automatically select playlists most suited for the user and type of workout. Additional playlist and podcast suggestions can also be provided based on past exercise sessions. The speaker volume can be automatically adjusted based on ambient noise levels.
Apple Watches running watchOS 26 will automatically leverage Smart Stacks to display informational prompts based on a user's routines and sensor data throughout a day. An example is a prompt to use the Backtrack feature to retrace one's steps when it seems one might be lost in a remote location. A quick wrist flick can now dismiss notifications. Forgetful users can dictate or type notes to themselves using the new Notes app.
Calls and messaging gain added features in watchOS 26. Text messages are automatically AI-translated and gain suggested actions based on their content. Live Translation of messages is only available on the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 connected to an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone. Apple Watch users can hear the caller's name and why they are calling prior to answering. When placed on hold during calls, users will now be alerted when they are taken off hold.
