Apple rolls out iOS 17.0.3 with overheating fix for new iPhone 15 models
Apple has started rolling out iOS 17.0.3, a few days after it acknowledged overheating issues affecting its latest iPhones. As its release number suggests, iOS 17.0.3 is a minor update on the scheme of things. Hence, it contains no new major features.
Instead, Apple states that the new update provides important bug fixes and security updates. For some reason, Apple has not provided any specifics for how it has prevented the iPhone 15 series from overheating. According to Apple, these are CVE-2023-42824 and CVE-2023-5217, which are described as follows:
- CVE-2023-42824
- Impact: A local attacker may be able to elevate their privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6.
- CVE-2023-5217
- Impact: A buffer overflow may result in arbitrary code execution
However, the release of a software update to resolve overheating runs counter to Apple blaming third-party apps for unnecessarily stressing the series' CPU cores. For reference, Apple claimed that the likes of Asphalt 9: Legends, Instagram and Uber were at fault; all but Asphalt 9: Legends have been updated so far. Incidentally, 9to5Mac claims to have been informed by Apple that the new titanium frame in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max helps rather than hinders heat dissipation. iOS 17.0.3 should be available to download from today for the iPhone XS onwards.
