The iPhone 14 series will land later in the year and rumors have slowly surfaced about the kind of hardware the phones will feature. Word on the grapevine strongly indicates the phones will offer 48 MP cameras but a new leak has now called that into doubt.
According to Chinese leaker It's Fat, the iPhone 14 Pro will sport the IMX703 with a 1/1.67-inch sensor size and 1.9 μm pixels. Those numbers may look familiar and there's an obvious reason for that: the IMX703 is the same 12 MP sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro models. Using the same sensor in successive years wouldn't be too shocking but Apple has used different main sensors on the Pro models starting with the iPhone 11 series.
Sources touting a 48 MP camera for the iPhone 14 series also claim the phones will offer 8K video recording. That's an important tidbit seeing as 8K recording isn't possible on a 12 MP sensor. For what it's worth, though, the sources claiming a 48 MP camera have proven to be more reliable than this particular leaker tipping a 12 MP sensor. Time will tell.
