As you probably know, the new iPad Pro can be already pre-ordered, and general availability will begin on the last day of March. On the surface, the new 9.7-inch slate looks like nothing more but a smaller iteration of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but the reality is quite different. A new feature that has been ignored so far is the embedded Apple SIM, a feature not present in the larger iPad Pro.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro features an Apple SIM but does not have an embedded one. Even more, Apple lists two 9.7-inch iPad Pro models on its iPad LTE compatibility page - one without an embedded SIM, and the other having this feature. According to 9t05Mac, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro without this feature "is probably a model specifically designed for the countries where official Apple SIM partners do not yet exist."
This still has to be confirmed by Apple, but TechCrunch also reveals an interesting piece of unconfirmed information. According to them, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro LTE with internal embedded Apple SIM can also use another SIM via the external slot. This way, they can choose any carrier compatible.
Unfortunately, it is very likely that Apple will not deliver both models to most markets since not all carriers support Apple SIM. We will get back to this topic once the new iPad Pro hits the market, so stay tuned.
