The world of eGPUs is heating up again, with Minisforum announcing the DEG2 last week as a successor to the DEG1 (curr. $99 on Amazon). Now, Aoostar has released the EG01 in China, with a global launch set to follow soon too. To recap, Aoostar revealed the EG01 just over a month ago with OCuLink connectivity and support for either ATX or SFX power supplies (PSUs).
Ostensibly, the EG01 resembles a Minisforum DEG1 but with a mount for storing a mini-PC. As the image below shows, this mount is detachable but must be screwed in via three screws that attach beneath the EG01's bottom plate. In other words, this mounting solution is slightly more permanent than the GPU bracket that attaches to an ATX or SFX PSU.
A major area in which the EG01 differs from the DEG1 is Aoostar's decision to include 6-pin DC and 8-pin CPU connectors. Theoretically, the former provides up to 150 W to a mini-PC via a DC power connector that Aoostar includes in the box. Meanwhile, it seems that the 8-in CPU connector is there for those who want to directly connect a CPU in an open workbench-style system.
Currently, Aoostar is offering the EG01 in China for CNY 474 (~$67). By contrast, the company has decided to charge $109 for the same device globally. The Aoostar EG01 will be available to pre-order globally on November 2 at 12:00 UTC.
