Anoma is a relatively young watch brand with roots in both art and industrial design. It was founded by a team which is looking to bring a fresh perspective to traditional Swiss watchmaking. Previous Anoma releases have been all about geometric designs and detail, often in collaboration with artists or inspired by important design movements. The new A1 Optical feels like the clearest expression yet of their philosophy.
Right away, the A1 Optical comes off as an atypical watch. The case is not a standard circle or cushion - it's a rounded triangle. This shape, according to the team, was inspired by a Charlotte Perriand table from the 1950s. Looking at the images, the homage is clear: soft, organic, almost pebble-like edges instead of hard lines. It sits quite compact at 39mm, but because of those shapely sides, it wears smaller, around 37mm.
The dial is where this watch really gets interesting. Under changing light, the engraved, offset triangles refract in a way that "tempt you to tilt your wrist back and forth". It’s impressive - and can be a little distracting. The craftsmanship is obvious, but some might find the dial veers a bit close to "art for art’s sake." For folks who want quick legibility, it can take some getting used to, but nonetheless, it looks stunning.
