Amazon is taking Alexa beyond Echo speakers and Fire TVs. The company has quietly launched Alexa.com, a web-based interface for its new Alexa+ AI assistant, giving Early Access users a way to chat with Alexa in a browser much like they would with ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
For now, Alexa.com is part of the Alexa+ Early Access program. To use it, you need a US-based Amazon account, access to Alexa+, and at least one compatible device such as the Amazon Echo Studio, Fire TV, or Fire tablet linked to your account. Child profiles are not supported on the web yet, and Amazon is still restricting the rollout to the United States.
What Alexa.com can do
According to Amazon, Alexa.com brings the “full power of Alexa+” into the browser. The site presents a familiar chat-style interface where you can:
- Ask general knowledge questions or dive into complex topics
- Plan trips and build itineraries, including tickets and calendar entries
- Organise tasks, to-do lists, and reminders
- Get help with homework or research
- Generate content such as emails, summaries, or basic creative text
Crucially, Alexa+ on the web is designed to share context with your other devices. Conversations started on Alexa.com can be picked up later on an Echo speaker, Fire TV, or in the Alexa mobile app, with the assistant remembering what you were talking about.
The web app also integrates with the broader Amazon ecosystem. Third-party reports highlight support for uploading documents and images for Alexa+ to parse, converting recipes into shopping lists, and tying into services like Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods for meal planning and grocery delivery, though some of these features are still rolling out.
Early Access limitations
Alexa.com is still labelled as an Early Access experience and comes with several notable limitations:
- Interaction is text-only in the browser for now; there is no direct voice input.
- Music playback and some entertainment controls are not available on the website.
- Smart home controls are more limited than on Echo devices; some device types and routines still need the app or a speaker.
- Only adult profiles with US English language settings are supported.
Amazon says more capabilities will be added over time, and pitches the web app as a complement to Echo hardware rather than a full replacement.
Pricing and positioning
Alexa+ is Amazon’s generative AI upgrade to the classic Alexa assistant. It offers more natural, multi-step conversations and can perform “agentic” tasks like booking services or handling follow-up actions on your behalf. The service costs US$19.99 per month, but is included at no extra cost for US Prime members, according to Amazon’s earlier Alexa+ announcements.
With Alexa.com, Amazon is clearly positioning Alexa+ as a direct competitor to browser-based AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, while leaning on its existing base of more than half a billion Alexa-enabled devices. Users can now switch between voice on Echo, touch on Fire TV, and keyboard-and-mouse in a browser, all tied to the same assistant and account.
