The Alienware x15 R1 is quite simply the best gaming laptop on the market right now with best in class performance and a design that sets it apart in all the right ways. A laptop this powerful, though, runs hot and some might take issue with the display, but we sure don't. It looks and plays gorgeous, and needs to be on the top of everyone's list – assuming you have the budget for it, that is.

The X15 makes less sense, very little I would say. It’s heavier and larger than the competition without a significant CPU/GPU advantage, since most performance 15-inch ultraportables offer up to 100W RTX graphics these days. It also lacks the CherryMX keyboard available on the X17, so I’d reckon it would need to be aggressively priced for customers to pick it over something like a Blade 15. To wrap this up, I’ll advise you to wait for detailed reviews if you’re interested in any of these products. We’ll most likely not have them here on the site, since we’re not on Dell’s good graces for review samples, and I don’t think getting one of these just for review is worth it for us. I’d love to hear your thoughts on them in the comments section down below, though, if you end up getting any of these.

Dell has stuffed a 110 W TGP Nvidia GPU in a chassis that's thinner than even the Razer Blade 15. Though mostly a homerun when compared to the outgoing Alienware m15, there are a few downsides involving size and performance that users will want to know beforehand.

The Alienware x15 R1 impresses with its design, performance and screen – it’s one of the best gaming laptops around right now. It also includes a great keyboard and it’s a solid thermal performer. That said, it’s worth looking elsewhere if you want more ports or better battery life, and you’ll have to be careful about which version you buy.

On the whole, the Alienware x15 is a more successful redesign than the x17, and a good gaming laptop. The slimmer chassis and slight bump in weight make more sense at 15 inches, and the performance was more in line with what we'd expect. The system's portability and raw power don't blow us away, but it's a good mix of the two. If you're shopping in the $2,000-plus gaming tier, this is one of the better options out there. It's not the best of the bunch, however: The Razer Blade 15 Advanced Edition we reviewed was a bit more expensive (though playing with configurations can fix that), but offered a superior GPU, more storage, longer battery life, and a lighter design. Razer's flagship remains our favorite cost-no-object gaming rig, but if you like the Alienware's design, it's a solid alternative.

The Alienware X series of gaming laptops are a new design for 2021 with 4-fan cooling and silicone gallium thermal paste. Available in 15” and 17” sizes as the Alienware x15 and x17, we review both. These slim gaming laptops have Intel 11th gen H series CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 3060/3070/3080 dedicated graphics. Display options range from high refresh full HD to QHD 240Hz (x15) and 4K 120Hz (x17). The Alienware x15 and x17 have a healthy selection of ports including Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6E, per key RGB lighting with Tron lights and an optional Cherry MX keyboard on the x17.

The Alienware x15 is a smart, super-thin gaming laptop with a top-notch display that runs faster than any laptop we’ve ever tested. That’s pretty much all most potential buyers will need to know. The speaker system could be more accommodating to non-gaming sources, the port selection could be wider and the keyboard backlight could light all of the key labels, but I think these are ultimately rather minor quibbles. None of this detracts from a notebook that quantifiably improves your gaming experience, and if performance is at the top of your laptop-buying agenda, there’s simply no better choice.

Alienware's new X15 is basically a case study in thermal engineering, as well as industrial design and feature trade-offs. The Alienware team at Dell engineered the heck out of this machine's thermal solution, but it costs the machine some creature comforts as a result. We would have appreciated even one USB-C port on one side edge of this laptop. And locating its microSD card slot on a side edge would have been glorious too, but it just wasn't in the cards apparently, having to accommodate the X15's quad-blower cooling solution. That quad-cooling solution is also a first for us, as we've never seen this in a laptop of any kind before, but it also drove the need to eliminate SO-DIMM socketed RAM in the machine. So again, with the X15 it's all about trade-offs. You get a fantastic, futuristic-looking, just a hair over 5lb laptop here, with great gaming chops, especially for its size and weight class. However, in exchange for its classy chassis and industrial design features, there are obvious concessions that needed to be made.

Dell has refreshed the Alienware x15 lineup with the new x15 R2. This year's x15 R2 offers internal upgrades to Intel Alder Lake-H and Nvidia RTX 30 Series Ti GPUs while retaining much of the design as the previous generation. The Alienware x15 R2 finds enough room to flex its muscles despite the thin chassis and will definitely appeal to the enthusiast gamer, but there are a few areas of concern to be aware of.

Having the ability to flip between games and serious work is a major benefit in a laptop, and certainly beats having one computer for work and another for play. The Alienware X15 R2 would make a fine addition to any desk, as long as you’re prepared to put up with the lighting and have a higher-res monitor to hook it up to in order to make the most of its pixel-pushing potential. At more than £2000, whether it represents good value for money is a different question, as it shares a marketplace with the MSI Creator Z17 and ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 which are also powerful, expensive beasts, and you can pick up a 14in M2 MacBook Pro for around the same cost. The Alienware has its looks and a long gaming pedigree to fall back on, but despite being an excellent laptop, it’s far from the only game in town.

Easily one of the most gorgeous gaming laptops we’ve ever laid eyes on, the Alienware x15 R2 is a sleek and distinctive number, with a striking white chassis. Opening it up, you'll find the inside is no less stunning, with rainbow-colored RGB lighting gleaming across the thin keyboard. The pricing for the model we tested starts at $2,910 (£2,800 / AU$5,203) for the lowest specs, which includes an Intel Core i7, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB of LPDDR5, and 512 GB of storage space. But if you opt for the highest upgrades and specs, that price tag will shoot up to somewhere around $4,315 (£5,070 / AU$8,000). It’s absolutely mind-boggling how a gaming laptop this powerful can be so thin and lightweight; it’s genuinely a marvel in design. And though it’s listed as being five pounds, it really doesn't feel heavier than two. Taking the price into consideration, you’re really paying for that design choice. The screen size does make the laptop wider, which means it's harder to squeeze it into smaller bags, but once it’s in there you probably won't notice the full weight.

The key highlight of the Alienware x15 R2 is its thin, beautiful design and excellent build quality, which you would expect when spending a premium. But when it comes to performance, especially considering the price, there are definitely better options available. But, for whom the Alienware x15 R2 is the right choice then? Well, we wouldn’t mind recommending it to the people who prioritize the fit and finish of the laptop over performance and cooling.

My other gripe is the somewhat impenetrable Alienware Command Center software for controlling system functions, including the various lighting zones, fan speed and other system details. It's clunky, opaque and makes arranging custom lighting much more difficult than it needs to be. It feels like the Dell UX team never got near this one. I'm not the only person that feels this way. Despite these issues, and a general sense that gaming laptop innovation has hit a bit of a plateau in the past few years, the slim Alienware x15 R2 has earned a place on my short list of premium gaming laptops to strongly consider if you're thinking about making a multiyear investment.

The key benefit to the Alienware x15 R2 is that you get a lot of power that comes in a thin and light package. That means that this laptop is for gaming on the go. If you’re gaming from one place all of the time, you’re probably looking more toward a tower or build.
