Brightin Star, a manufacturer known for affordable lenses, has introduced a new 35mm f/1.4 full-frame lens that is relatively compact with a weight of 7.7 oz and is primarily intended to offer a strong price-performance ratio.
The lens features a classic retro look and is offered for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Leica SL mounts. The latter version is also compatible with SL cameras from Panasonic as well as the Sigma fp (from $1,680 on Amazon). The aperture ring can be used with or without clicks, depending on whether the lens is being used for photos or videos. The lens does not support autofocus and can be manually focused down to a distance of 0.3 meters.
In order to make the low price tag possible, Brightin Star opts for a relatively simple lens construction with 7 elements in 6 groups and completely foregoes aspherical or apochromatically corrected lenses. As the manufacturer's MTF curves shows, the lens renders very few details at the edges of the frame at maximum aperture. The lens is only sharp in the center of the image, which should make it suitable for portraits, among other scenarios.
