The new 14-inch business laptop will have the distinction of weighing less than 1 kg while still offering Gorilla Glass touchscreen, 15 W ULV Intel CPU options, and a magnesium-lithium magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis that promises improved rigidity.

Lenovo, Dell, and HP aren't the only major players in town. Taiwanese maker Acer has been selling its own line of TravelMate business laptops since at least 2011. Its latest model will be the TravelMate X514 to supplant the last generation 14-inch TravelMate X3410 series.

Core specifications include:

  • 14-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS touchscreen, Gorilla Glass
  • Intel Core i7-8565U CPU
  • Up to 16 GB DDR4 RAM
  • Up to 512 GB SSD
  • Up to 10 hours of battery life
  • 19.9 mm thickness
  • 980 g

Acer is calling its TravelMate X514 the "lightest and thinnest professional notebook" from the company thus far. In actuality, however, the new laptop will be the same thickness as the TravelMate X3410 (19.9 mm) albeit at several hundred grams lighter (0.98 kg vs. 1.69 kg). Perhaps unsurprisingly, a few features will be dropped on the newer model including the full-size SD reader and legacy VGA port.

Interestingly, the press release makes no mention of any Nvidia or AMD GPU options unlike on the TravelMate X3410 with its MX130 GPU. We suspect that the very light weight of the system had priority over port selection and graphics options during development.

Expect the TravelMate X514 to begin shipping this June for a starting price of $1100. The base specifications include a Core i5-8265 CPU, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, and 256 GB SSD.

Acer

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 13, 2019) Acer today announced its new TravelMate X514-51 thin and

light commercial notebook series for small and medium businesses. It’s designed for

professionals requiring a durable, yet sleek device that can support heavy workloads and

frequent business travel.

The TravelMate X514-51 sports a premium quality magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum

alloy chassis for holding up to the rigors of life on the go. These materials are two to four times

stronger than standard aluminum alloys at the same thickness, yet weigh up to 20-35 percent

less. This blend of materials makes the TravelMate X514-51 series thin and light, while also

being resistant to bending and twisting.

Highly portable, the TravelMate X514-51 weighs just 2.16 pounds and measures only 0.6 inches

thin making it easier than ever to hold and fit in a briefcase, bag or backpack. Up to 10 hours(1)

of battery life supports a full day’s work on a single charge. Primed for excellent performance,

the new notebooks are powered by up to 8th Generation Intel®

CoreTM

i7 processors, up to 16GB

DDR4 memory, and up to fast and responsive 512GB solid state drives for viewing and editing

large spreadsheets, presentations and videos. Outfitted with Windows 10 Pro, the TravelMate

X514-51 provides powerful security and productivity essentials.

“We’re confident our professional customers will appreciate our thinnest and lightest

professional notebooks to date,” said Chris Chiang, Acer America vice president of product

management. “Sleek, yet robust, they’re built for the rigors of frequent travel with a sturdy

chassis and strong security features to keep data safe at home and abroad.”

Powerful Components, Durable Construction

Supporting Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) with IPS technology, the TravelMate X514-51’s 14-

inch touchscreen sports narrow .36-inch bezels to maximize viewing area and provide clear

viewing of documents, video and webpages, even at wide angles. Acer BlueLightShieldTM

lets

customers adjust the blue light emitted for maximum viewing comfort.

A full-sized back-lit keyboard provides comfortable typing and helps business travelers stay

productive in low-light areas, such as airplanes and commuter trains. A precision touchpad with

a damage-resistant, ultra-responsive Corning® Gorilla® Glass NBTTM touchpad supports two-finger

scroll, pinch and gestures. Compared to traditional mylar, Corning® Gorilla® Glass is harder,

more resistant to scratches as well as flatter, so fingers glide more smoothly over the surface.

It’s also easier to clean.

Skype for Business Certified, the TravelMate X514-51 boasts cutting-edge audio and video with

handy meeting features. Professionals who interface with off-site vendors, associates and

partners will appreciate the 720p HD webcam with Acer Purified.Voice, two built-in speakers

and two microphones for far-field pickup, keyboard suppression and voice tracking. Compatible

with Cortana for leveraging voice commands, it’s designed to accelerate tasks for staying

organized.

For quick plug-and-play docking, the TravelMate X514-51 has a USB Type-C port for pairing with

an optional Acer USB Type-CTM Dock II (sold separately) to expand workspace capabilities,

including the connection of up to three 4K displays. Excellent connectivity is delivered via MU-

MIMO 2x2 802.11ac and Bluetooth® 5.0.

Tight Security, Easy Maintenance

The TravelMate X514-51 comes with robust security features. An embedded fingerprint reader,

integrated into the power button, works with Windows Hello for quick and secure sign-in via a

fingertip. A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 chip provides hardware-based protection for

passwords and encryption keys. The system is also preloaded with Acer ProShield, a suite of 3

security and management tools, to safeguard sensitive data. A Kensington lock provides

additional security. To facilitate repair, simply removing 11 screws on the underside of the

chassis provides access the solid state drive, battery, heat sink and Wifi network interface card.
