The gaming laptop's i7-13700H and the RTX 4060 are perfectly suited to modern games. And, on top of that, the Nitro 17 hardly suffers from any weaknesses. So far, so predictable. The clever power management implementation makes all the difference and ensures Acer's laptop is quiet despite its power.

Well, well, the Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-51) is a true gaming device that isn’t too expensive. Sure, it’s made of plastic but you can open the lid with a single hand and the base is stable. The 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard is comfortable for typing and gaming while the touchpad can be improved. We have no complaints regarding the power of this laptop. Our configuration is maxed out in terms of CPU, GPU, and display options. The CPU can maintain high clocks and power limits in any kind of load in “Turbo” or “Performance mode”. The latter offers less noise but comes with a not-so-well-tuned temperature hysteresis that can be distracting during gaming. The upgradability is up to date – two SODIMMs for up to 32GB DDR5-4800MHz RAM and two Gen 4 M.2 slots. The comfort during load depends on the usage. In “Silent” mode, the laptop is almost quiet which is suitable for casual tasks like watching videos. In “Turbo”, the two fans are very loud so the “Performance” preset looks like the way to go if you don’t mind the RPM fluctuations that we already mentioned.

The present Acer Nitro 17 combines a Ryzen 7 7735HS with a GeForce RTX 4070 for about US$1,900. In this review, you can find out whether this combination can magic enough frames onto the internal QHD display when running new games, too.

So, 2023 proves to be a really difficult year for gamers looking for a medium-budget laptop. The reason for that is the presence of many good choices, contrary to the expectations. One of the better options out there is the Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-71). It is extremely powerful and has a very impressive cooling solution. It is able to take advantage of the RTX 4060 (with its MUX switch) while running at temperatures of less than 70°C. We didn’t particularly like the fact that you need to go to the BIOS settings in order to access the “dGPU only” function. At the same time, this mode is readily available in the first-party software in competitors like the ASUS ROG Strix G16, or within the NVIDIA Control Center in the Dell G16 7630. Another thing we were not fascinated by was the weight of the device.

The Acer Nitro 17 is one great gaming laptop for its price. But as you have just read, it’s not without its faults. But every budget laptop makes a few missteps and none of our issues with this 17.3-inch Nitro 17 are deal breakers. Sure, the plastic chassis is clunky, the display isn’t the brightest, the touchpad is tiny, and the webcam is middling. These design drawbacks are what you must tolerate for the bang this Nitro 15 provides for your gaming buck. At its core, the Nitro 17’s CPU-GPU pairing of the Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX 4050 graphics allow it to meddle with pricier gaming laptops. For budget-first buyers, this Acer Nitro 17 AN17-41-R6L9 delivers strong 1080p gaming performance for the price, while also providing a roomy display, quiet operation, and adequate battery life.

The Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-41) has its advantages over the Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-71) and the Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-51). The main reason is the efficient and powerful Zen 4 CPUs. This combined with a 90.61Wh battery leads to 20 hours of Web browsing, or 9 hours and 5 minutes of video playback away from the charger. The Intel versions can only dream about such long autonomous work on a single charge. The second big pro of this laptop is the CPU temperature under load. In our case, the Ryzen 7 7840HS can maintain a high clock of~4.90 GHz in short and medium loads, while the temperatures are below 60°C – that’s great! Also, we can say that the notebook’s fans feel a bit quieter in any kind of usage compared to the Acer Nitro 17 (AN17-51). The chassis rigidity is adequate for the price class – the base is solid while the lid is a bit flexible. The keyboard is comfortable for typing or gaming and it has a 4-zone RGB backlight.

The Acer Nitro 17 isn't an exceptional gaming laptop; it's kind of chunky even among 17.3-inch notebooks, with a lackluster keyboard, and it doesn't outperform comparably priced machines. But there's a lot to like about it, including a good array of ports, a screen that's sharp and bright for work and play alike, and battery life that soundly beats the competition. All this comes at an affordable price. If size and weight aren't big concerns, you'll find the Nitro 17 a dependable big-screen gaming rig. If you crave higher quality, consider a slight step down or up in screen size with the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 or Alienware m18 respectively.

Since there’s no such thing as the perfect product, we’ll always find a few “cons” in a review. However, the three I’ve listed for the Nitro 17 are borderline irrelevant, and in the case of SSD capacity, easily fixed after purchase. Everything important – the gaming performance, display quality, sound system, keyboard and battery life – is well above par for a 17.3in laptop costing just £1,350, while even the runt of the RTX 40-series GPU litter is capable of delivering good-quality FHD gaming. This is a gaming laptop that comes highly recommended.

The Acer Nitro 17 is a refresh of Acer's budget-minded gaming laptops with updated specs and a keyboard featuring the brand new Microsoft Copilot key. Though its design is pretty basic, the RGB-lit keyboard gives it an aesthetically pleasing look, while performance should be nicely boosted thanks to the current-gen components it's equipped with.

The Acer Nitro 17 combines a spacious display with top performance and a budget-friendly price. It’s a great value pick for gamers looking to spend less than $1500 on a laptop that can do it all. In fact, for those who only want a desktop or a laptop for gaming, the Nitro 17 is a fantastic option and it may even be a worthy replacement for older or underpowered desktop gaming PCs. It has a few shortcomings, including a sub-par webcam and a bulky, plastic design. However, it delivers in all the areas that matter most. The Nitro 17 impressed me with its stellar gaming performance and outscored the competition in our battery life tests.

Its 8 cores are powered by the Zen 4 architecture and are SMT-enabled for a total of 16 processing threads. 4.0 GHz is the base clock speed and the highest Boost clock speed achievable is 5.2 GHz. The 7940HS introduces Ryzen AI which is AMD's answer to Intel's DL Boost and GNA technologies; the Radeon 780M serves as the integrated graphics adapter.
AMD Hawk Point (Zen 4/4c, Ryzen 8040):
R7 8845HS: A powerful Hawk Point family chip that saw the light of day in H2 2023. We believe the 8845HS to be an R7 7840HS in disguise but with higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU. The 8845HS features 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) running at up to 5.1 GHz. Last but not the least, the Radeon 780M serves as the integrated GPU.

2.99 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.25 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
86.59%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
