Acer Iconia Tab 8 W W1-810-16HN Tablet Review

For the original German review, see here.
Now the next inexpensive Windows 8.1 tablet is on our test bench. To be more precise it is the 8-inch Iconia Tab W W1-810-16HN from Acer. We previously reviewed both Acer's Iconia W3-810-27602G03nsw and Acer's Iconia W4-820-2466 8-inch tablets. Our report uncovers whether the Iconia Tab 8 W is compelling.
The availability of affordable 8-inch Windows tablets has grown immensely in the last few months, and thus the Iconia Tab has plenty of contenders. For example, Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845, HP's Stream 8 5900ng or even i.onik's 8-inch TW Series 1 belong to its rivals.
Case
The casing of the Iconia Tab is comprised of white plastic. A silver-gray plastic rim that gets wider toward the tablet's upper edge envelops the narrow sides. The device's back features a grooved texture. The tablet's weight adds up to 406.3 grams, which is on par with rivals like HP's Stream 8 5900ng (410 grams). The tablet doesn't have a maintenance cover. Acer does not show weaknesses in build and delivers a solidly built device. The stiffness is also satisfactory; the tablet can only be warped to a slight degree.
Connectivity
The interfaces of the Iconia Tab are identical with those of HP's Stream 8 5900ng and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845. None of the tablets offer an HDMI-out. Acer's tablet also lacks a Windows button that returns the user to the home screen. Thus, the corresponding icon in Windows' Charms Bar has to be used.
Communication
The Iconia Tab sports a Wi-Fi module from Broadcom that supports the 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi standards. We did not have any problems with the Wi-Fi connection between the router and tablet. It was stable in a 15-meter radius around the router. In addition to the Wi-Fi module, a Bluetooth 4.0 chip is also installed in the tablet.
Webcam
Both cameras in the Iconia Tab have a resolution of 2 MP and are thus primarily suitable for snapshots.
Accessories
No accessories apart from various instruction and information leaflets are included for the tablet.
Operating System
The Bing version of Windows 8.1 (32-bit) is pre-loaded on the Iconia Tab 8 W. The 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 is used because it is easier on the resources.
Software
A one-year license for MS Office 365 Personal is included on the tablet. The license has to be activated within a specified time or it will expire. MS Office can be used on both the tablet and a laptop/PC.
Touchscreen
The capacitive touchscreen of the Iconia Tab supports 5 touch points. We did not experience any problems with it, and it responded instantly to inputs. The small icons and buttons are hit very accurately after a while when the tablet is used in desktop mode.
Maintenance
The tablet does not have any maintenance options.
Warranty
Like both HP's Stream 8 5900ng and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845, the Iconia Tab comes with a one-year warranty that can be upgraded. Approximately 80 Euros (~$90) is due for a three-year warranty.
Display
The 8-inch screen in the Iconia Tab has a native resolution of 1280x800 pixels. It can boast with a good brightness of 298.4 cd/m². The screens of HP's Stream 8 5900ng (327 cd/m²) and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845 (365.4 cd/m²) are, however, even brighter. Clouding is particularly visible on the screen's left edge in dark contents.

The contrast of 549:1 and black level of 0.57 cd/m² are decent and are on par with the rates of HP's (557:1; 0.61 cd/m²). The screen in the Venue 8 (1091:1; 0.35 cd/m²) can offer clearly better rates. The screen of the Iconia Tab cannot reproduce either the sRGB or AdobeRGB color spaces. The coverage rates are 62% (sRGB) and 46% (AdobeRGB).
The average DeltaE 2000 shift is 7.3 in state of delivery. A rate less than 3 would be desirable. The screen does not exhibit a bluish cast.
Performance
Acer's Iconia Tab 8 W W1-810-16HN is an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet. The device's computing performance is strong enough for office and Internet applications. In addition to apps from the Windows Store, it is possible to run desktop applications on the tablet. The device renders Full HD videos without problems. Our review sample is available for 150 Euros (~$169). We did not discover other configurations.
Processor
Like all 8-inch Windows tablets that we have recently tested, the Iconia is also equipped with an Atom Z3735G quad-core processor. The processor operates with a base speed of 1.33 GHz, which can be increased up to 1.83 GHz via Turbo. The Iconia also utilizes its CPU Turbo. The CPU processed the single-thread tests of the Cinebench benchmarks with 1.58 to 1.83 GHz. The multi-thread tests were run with 1.58 GHz. The behavior is identical in both AC and battery modes. This is also the case in both HP's Stream 8 5900ng and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845. Consequently, the benchmark scores of the three tablets are similar. In total, the performance of the three tablets is located in the lower performance scale. AMD's counterparts of the Atom processor are found within the E and A lines. However, tablets with the corresponding AMD APUs are still very rare.

System Performance
Like both Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845 and HP's Stream 8 5900ng, the Iconia Tab only has a working memory capacity of 1 GB - not very much for a Windows computer. That was not noticed in routine use; the touch interface runs smoothly. The low working memory capacity might be noticed when using desktop applications. The PCMark scores of our three comparison tablets are also virtually identical. The scores correspond to the performance of the Atom processor.

Storage Devices
The Iconia Tab's storage capacity is also identical with HP's Stream 8 5900ng and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845. All three tablets have a 32 GB eMMC storage module. The transfer rates of the module installed in the Iconia are on a standard level for an eMMC storage. HP's Stream 8 and the Venue 8 achieve worse rates in state of delivery because they come with enabled hard drive encoding. They are on par with the Iconia Tab after the encoding is disabled. Buyers of the Acer tablet will have roughly 18.4 GB of the 32 GB available in state of delivery. The remaining storage capacity is divided between the Windows installation and recovery partition. The storage capacity can be extended via a micro-SD card should it get tight. Furthermore, the tablet's owner can use up to 1 TB of storage in Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage for one year - free of charge.

Graphics Card
Intel's HD Graphics core is inside the Iconia Tab. The GPU supports DirectX 11 and clocks with speeds of up to 646 MHz. The 3DMark benchmark scores of Acer's tablet correspond with those of HP's Stream 8 and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845. That is not surprising because both rivals sport the same graphics core.

Gaming Performance
The Iconia Tab - just like similar tablets from the competition - is made for games that are available in the Windows Store. These titles have been developed for "weak" hardware compared with Core processors. Sophisticated 3D games like The Crew or Far Cry 4 cannot be played.

Temperature
The tablet performed the stress test (Prime95 and Furmark run for at least one hour) in both AC and battery modes in the same manner. The processor clocked with 1.58 GHz for roughly 15 minutes and then throttled to 1.33 GHz. It repetitively slowed down to 1.2 GHz after approximately 40 minutes. The graphics core started the stress test with 620 MHz and dropped to 300 MHz after a while. We measured temperatures of over 40 °C in several measuring points on the casing.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.6 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 34.1 °C / 93 F, ranging from 21.2 to 53.2 °C for the class Tablet.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 46.2 °C / 115 F, compared to the average of 33.6 °C / 92 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.9 °C / 84 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
Speakers
The stereo speakers have been installed in the Iconia's lower back edge. They produce a decent sound that lacks bass. We have had to listen to inferior tablet speakers. A combo-audio jack for connecting headphones or a headset is available.
Energy Management
Power Consumption
The Iconia Tab is not very power guzzling. It is satisfied with 0.4 to 0.6 watts when idling. The tablet consumed approximately 10 watts at the beginning of the stress test, which dropped in the course because the CPU and GPU throttle. Thus, Acer's tablet is roughly on par with HP's Stream 8 5900ng.

Battery Runtime
The Iconia Tab lasted for 12:48 hours in idle mode. HP's Stream 8 5900ng (12:28 h) and Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845 (11:51 h) are drained a bit sooner. Idle mode is ascertained using Battery Eater's Reader's test with minimum screen brightness and disabled wireless modules. The Iconia Tab shut down after 2:28 hours of load. It is thus located between HP's Stream 8 (2:39 h) and Dell's Venue 8 (2:10 h). The load runtime is checked with Battery Eater's Classic test. The screen's brightness is set to maximum, and the radio modules are enabled.
Acer's tablet finished the real-world Wi-Fi test after 6:02 hours. It again places itself between the Stream 8 (5:24 h) and the Venue 8 (6:42 h). Websites are automatically opened every 40 seconds, and the screen's brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m² for this test. We determine the video playback time by running the short movie Big Buck Bunny (H.264 encoding; 1920x1080 pixels) in a loop. The wireless modules are off, and the screen's brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m². The Iconia Tab lasted for 5:56 hours. Both the Stream 8 (5:50 h) and Venue 8 (6:07 h) achieve similar runtimes.
In sum, the Iconia Tab's battery life is good. Note: The Iconia Tab only has the energy profile "Balanced." We performed all runtime tests using this profile.

Verdict
The buyer gets a basic Windows 8.1 tablet in an 8-inch size with Acer's Iconia Tab 8 W W1-810-16HN. Apps run smoothly on the tablet and even playing Full HD videos is no problem for the device. Desktop applications can be run on the tablet because it comes with a full-blown Windows 8.1 operating system (not Windows RT). Acer installs a bright, viewing-angle stable, IPS screen in its Iconia Tab, which could have a slightly higher contrast. Like both HP's Stream 8 and Dell's Venue 8, the Iconia Tab does not feature an HDMI-out. Actually, that is inconceivable since it would be absolutely perfect as a silent playback device in conjunction with a TV set. The lack of a Windows button is just as inconceivable. The Charms Bar always has to be opened on the Iconia Tab in order to return to the home screen.
The price of Dell's Venue 8 Pro 3845 is on par with the Iconia Tab. It can boast with marginally longer runtimes in our real-world tests. Besides that, it sports a brighter, higher-contrast screen. HP's Stream 8 5900ng would come into question when a tablet with a 3G modem is wanted. Buyers who need an HDMI-out could, for example, take the i.onik 8-inch TW Series 1 or the Point of View WinTab 800W. However, both tablets only have a storage capacity of 16 GB.
