ASUS has announced the Chromebox 5, a mini-PC series based on Intel Alder Lake processors. Due to be released by the end of Q1 2023 from US$400, the Chromebox 5 should be significantly more powerful than its predecessors while maintaining their compact form factors.

ASUS has previewed plenty of Windows-based mini-PCs during CES 2023, including the PN64-E1 and the ExpertCenter PN42. ASUS has also refreshed its ChromeOS mini-PC series, which is now on its fifth generation model. According to ASUS' press release, the Chromebox 5 relies on now outdated Intel Alder Lake processors, unlike the PN64-E1. Still, Alder Lake processors are significantly more powerful than their Comet Lake or Ice Lake predecessors that power the Chromebox 4 and Fanless Chromebox, respectively.

Unfortunately, ASUS has not confirmed which Alder Lake parts will be available for the Chromebox 5 yet. Instead, the company has outlined that it will offer the Chromebox 5 with 12th Gen Intel Celeron, Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors. All Chromebox 5 units will feature WiFi 6E connectivity too, as well as a built-in Qi wireless charging pad for topping up devices at 15 W. Seemingly, the latter is possible courtesy of a plastic housing, which ASUS claims to be from post-consumer recycled (PCR) sources.

Moreover, the Chromebox 5 offers Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and can power four 4K displays simultaneously, with a DisplayPort and two HDMI connections also on hand to handle video output. The Chromebox 5 boasts four USB Type-A ports too, plus 2.5 Gigabit LAN, a microSD card reader and an M.2 slot that supports PCIe Gen 4 SSDs. Currently, ASUS hopes to begin selling the Chromebox 5 by the end of Q1 2023, but not necessarily globally. Prices will start at US$400; ASUS has not confirmed any specific pricing details yet though.
