The product naming scheme has been getting more confusing lately, and Linus from Linus Tech Tips has underlined how bad it has become by using the newer processors from AMD as an example. In the YouTube video, Linus uses the recent two lineups from the company, the Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series of mobile processors.
As Linus points out, even the desktop segment of processors has confusing names, and buyers with less knowledge of the naming scheme can easily buy something inferior without knowing that it's not one of the best-performing products. Take the Ryzen 5 7640U mobile APU, for example. When it's compared to the Ryzen 7 7735U, the latter will seem to be a better product as it has a higher number.
However, the Ryzen 7 7735U is actually an older processor with Zen 3+ architecture. The Ryzen 5 7640U, on the other hand, has the newer Zen 4 architecture, making it more capable than the other. Moreover, the first number after segmentation describes the year, and it doesn't have any relation with the performance. This alone can make an uninformed buyer get a less-capable yet new processor, thinking it's better than last year's high-performance chipset.
Linus also highlights out how the upcoming Ryzen AI 300 series is even more confusing, and the "AI" in the name is just there to attract investors. Of course, it's not AMD that Linus has bashed upon. He also called out Intel for its new Core Ultra series naming scheme and how even the company explains it wrongly on its very own website.
Given that this practice has become so common among brands, the only way to avoid falling into it is by educating yourself. However, as Linus points out, not many will have time to learn naming schemes that companies change too frequently. Instead, it's the brands that should simplify product names. Instead of misleading the buyers with higher numbers and fancy words, the naming scheme should guide the customers to the right product they need.
