Intel was spotted prepping the eight-core sixteen-thread i7-10875H, most likely in response to AMD's Ryzen 7 4800H. The Comet Lake part effectively renders both the i7-9750H and i9-9980H redundant. Success or failure, however, depend on pricing relative to the Ryzen competition.

The eight-core, sixteen thread Comet Lake i7-10875H was recently spotted on Geekbench with an impressive multithreaded score of 8369, effectively putting the Comet Lake i7 on par with the Coffee Lake i9 series: this score is a remarkable 45 percent higher than some i9-9880H implementations. The additional physical cores and threads make the i7-10875H substantially faster than its predecessor, the i7-9750H

Why does this matter, and why is Intel prepping an eight-core, sixteen-thread mobile i7? AMD's Ryzen 7 4800H is why. The Renoir APU, which is already in shipping laptops, dominates the i7-9750H with higher cores, more threads, and higher sustained clocks. It, in fact, offers multithreaded Geekbench performance that's on par with the leaked i7-10875H listing.

This makes i7-9750H laptops effectively redundant: the AMD option simply offers more at the same price point. The i7-10875H, with a higher core and thread count, offers Intel the only way to maintain some level of price/performance parity with AMD in the laptop market. With Ryzen 7 4800H laptops already selling for less than US$1000 in the Chinese market, it'll be interesting to see how Intel prices the i7-10875H. A prohibitively high price would make this part DOA up against the Ryzen competition.
