Deal | 97% positive reviews: Popular strategy game drops below $1 for the first time on Steam

Hordes of goblins, orcs, trolls and demons are making life difficult for the fantasy kingdom of Linirea in Kingdom Rush. To stop them, players build defenses along predetermined paths and try to hold off increasingly powerful waves of enemies before they reach the end of the map. On Steam, Kingdom Rush is 90% off until October 8, bringing the price down to $0.99 from $9.99. According to SteamDB, this marks the first time the strategy game from Ironhide has dropped below the $1 mark.

In terms of gameplay, Kingdom Rush offers classic tower defense with four different types of towers. Archers deal fast physical damage, mage towers break through armored enemies, barracks hold enemies at chokepoints and artillery clears out larger groups. Later, towers can be further specialized and equipped with additional abilities. Controllable heroes, reinforcement troops and special attacks also allow players to intervene directly in the middle of an enemy wave.

Feedback on Steam is exceptionally positive: 97% of more than 17,700 reviews recommend Kingdom Rush. Players particularly praise its surprisingly deep tactical gameplay, varied towers and enemies as well as its charming cartoon art style. However, some players criticize the fact that certain maps allow for only a few truly effective strategies and that some tower upgrades are significantly stronger than others. Some of the later missions also rely heavily on trial and error.

On the Steam Deck, Kingdom Rush is officially rated only as “Playable.” However, ProtonDB lists the strategy game as running natively, so no major issues should be expected on Valve's handheld.
