CheckMag
A $20 Casio might seem like a simple watch, but with the right tweaks, it can turn into something way more exciting. Metal cases, negative displays, custom dials—these nine Casio mods prove that even the most affordable watches can have serious personality.Anubhav Sharma 👁 Published 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 ...
There’s something oddly satisfying about taking a mass-produced Casio watch and turning it into something completely unique. Maybe it’s the contrast — Casios are known for their reliability and affordability, yet modders treat them like blank canvases. From handy tool watches to flashy, streetwear-inspired builds, these mods are not-so-subtle reminders that even a $20 digital watch can punch way above its weight with the right tweaks.
If we're being honest, it's not entirely about aesthetics, either. Some mods level up durability, add new features, or improve visibility — changes that make you wonder why Casio didn’t think of them first. Others, well, are purely for style, with custom dials, blacked-out designs, or metal cases that give a budget watch the feel of something much more premium.
The best part? Unlike high-end mechanical watch modding, Casio mods are relatively accessible. You don't need a watchmaker’s workshop or a degree in horology. All you require is a bit of patience, some aftermarket parts, and a willingness to experiment. It doesn't matter if you're into tactical builds, minimalist watches, or just plain old playful aesthetics, here are nine Casio mods that might just make your stock watch feel a little too basic.
1. Metal Case Conversion for the AE-1200, or the Casio Royale
The AE-1200 series 'Casio Royale' is one of the most beloved Casio watches of all time. It's an affordable watch that doesn't skimp on features, or looks, for that matter. For this mod, the original resin case of the watch is replaced with stainless-steel or aluminum counterparts. This adds a premium feel and more durability to the already tough model. The final modded timepiece often includes a matching metal bracelet. Check out the polished stainless-steel modding kit on SKXMOD.
2. Negative display modification for the F-91W
This pre-modded Casio F-91W, available on n-o-d-e.shop has a neat inverted black LCD, and while not everyone's a fan of negative displays, some watches arguably sport them pretty well. It also comes with a scannable NFC tag, which unfortunately can't be used as a tap-to-pay chip. This F-91W also comes with a white LED illuminator. A downside of this mod? It takes away the waterproof rating of the timepiece, reducing it to a splash-proof watch - but that comes with other mods on this list as well.
3. The Nuclear Royale
Over the years, CasiMods has churned out some extremely good-looking mods for Casio watches, which is also why their mods make multiple appearances in this list. The Nuclear Royale is one such mod that'll surely capture its fair share of attention if it rests on your wrist. Besides the nuclear sign, there are thematic metal screws. There's a grid window overlay and a custom zulu strap as well, alongside a neat yellow LED illuminator. There's nothing to not like here. Check out the Nuclear Royale here.
4. Casio AE-1200 "Full Moonshine"
The AE-1200 gets another unique transformation with the "Full Moonshine" hydromod. This mod swaps out the standard resin case for a bronze-colored metal variant, which gives the watch an aged, almost steampunk-like aesthetic. But it’s not just about looks—this mod introduces a black negative LCD with a full moon print subtly placed behind the functional analog clock. The hydromod treatment is just an icing on the cake. The entire case is filled with 100% silicone oil, which improves contrast, boosts colors, and even increases water resistance beyond the standard rating. The bracelet isn’t left out either; the stainless-steel strap has been heat-treated to match the bronze tone of the case. This build retains all the AE-1200’s core functions as well—world time, alarms, countdown timer.
5. Casio F-91W Smartwatch mod
This Casio F-91W mod turns the classic digital watch into a full-fledged smartwatch while keeping the original design almost completely intact. The display shows smartphone notifications, fitness tracking data, and other essential smartwatch features, all within the familiar retro LCD layout. A glance at the internals reveals a custom PCB, likely allowing Bluetooth connectivity and app syncing. The modder claims a 14-day battery life, charged via a magnetic fast charger, which is impressive for such a compact form factor.
6. Snoopy Casio F-91W mod
The Snoopy mod for the Casio F-91W adds a playful twist to the classic digital watch. With a fully customized white case and strap, the dial features printed Peanuts characters, and it seamlessly integrates into the design. The mod retains the F-91W’s core functions but focuses more on aesthetics, lending a clean, retro look.
7. Casio G-Santos, or the Santos de Cartier
The G-Santos is CasiMods' bold reimagination of the G-Shock DW5600BB, which turns it into a Santos de Cartier-inspired stainless-steel timepiece. The stock resin case has been replaced with a third-party steel case featuring exposed screws, giving the watch a more industrial feel. The mod also includes a matching steel bracelet. Alongside the presence of the silicon oil-based hydromod, the case has been weathered for a brushed metal look, further doubling down on the retro-futuristic aesthetic.
8. Desert CasiOak
Inspired by post-apocalyptic and Dune aesthetics, this GA-2100 mod (again, by CasiMods) takes rugged customization to another level. Featuring a heavily weathered case, metal screws, and a distressed green strap, it aptly embodies the worn-out, battle-hardened look Benson C. was aiming for. The case detailing and dial modifications keep the watch legible while maintaining its Mad Max-inspired feel at the same time. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that stands out with both functionality and raw, survivalist aesthetics. Unfortunately, this was a 1 of 1 piece, specifically designed for a client.
9. Casio AE-1300 Gradient Mod
The Casio AE-1300 is historically popular for its multi-functionality and sporty design. The gradient mod breathes new life into its monochrome display. For instance, in the mod pictured below, Reddit user u/Legitimate-Bed-6447 customized the dial and display with gradient color schemes, which transition smoothly between different hues to create a dynamic visual effect.
