Xiaomi currently offers a new midrange smartphone with a 200 MP main camera, namely the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G, which in our review performed well for the most part. DxOMark now praises the strengths of this camera, but also highlights the weaknesses of the camera system.

The cheaper sister model of the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G was recently the subject of a review here at Notebookcheck, and we were particularly impressed by the very bright AMOLED display, the solid 200 MP main camera and the long battery life. However, the visible PWM flickering and lack of wireless charging emerged as obvious points of criticism.

DxOMark has now been able to analyze the interesting 200 MP main camera and its 1/1.4 inch Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor in detail. The high-resolution sensor certainly has its advantages, as both photos and videos are recorded in extremely high detail. The camera also takes much better images than the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, at least with low digital zoom, even though the predecessor model is also equipped with a 200 MP main camera.

However, the lack of a telephoto camera resulted in deductions in the zoom rating, while the 8 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera is average at best for smartphones in this price range. The tiny pixels of the main camera cause greater image noise in low light despite 16-to-1 pixel binning. The white balance does not always work reliably, so photos and videos have a color cast and skin tones are not always displayed accurately.

The bokeh effect sometimes has visible artifacts, the video autofocus does not always work reliably, and the preview image in the camera app does not quite match the final photo. Such weaknesses are not unusual for this price range, but the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G scores only 121 points overall, which puts it in 75th place on the best list just behind the Google Pixel 6a and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max.
