Xiaomi's faster, lighter and smoother OS will only reach 16 devices by late Q2 2021; MIUI 12.5 will not begin rolling out globally until April or May
Xiaomi has lifted the lid on MIUI 12.5, the OS that it billed would be faster, lighter and smoother than the current MIUI 12. Sadly, the announcement was a bit of a mixed bag for Xiaomi fans, in our opinion. In fairness to Xiaomi, its 'faster, smoother and lighter' PR appears to have some substance.
According to Xiaomi, MIUI 12.5 contains a rewritten System UI that has reduced 'core scene memory' by 20% compared to MIUI 12. The rewrite also reduces CPU usage by 22% and allows system apps to consume 15% less power. Additionally, Xiaomi claims to have given gesture navigation a dedicated rendering thread, a change that should supposedly improve gesture responsiveness.
Moreover, MIUI 12.5 contains more uninstallable or removable apps. Xiaomi did not explain what removable means in this context, but the distinction between uninstallable and removable implies that the latter can only be disabled. Nonetheless, Xiaomi could not help but have a dig at One UI 2.5 and iOS 14.2.1, which it claims have more system apps than MIUI 12.5 does.
The bad news is how many devices will receive MIUI 12.5 and when. Currently, only sixteen devices are nailed on for MIUI 12.5, although Xiaomi promises to 'gradually publish' the release schedule for more devices on MIUI.com. Xiaomi has split these sixteen devices into two waves, which are as follows:
First wave
- Mi 10T
- Mi 10T Pro
- Mi 10
- Mi 10 Pro
- Mi 11
Second wave
- Mi 10 Lite 5G
- Mi 10T Lite
- Mi Note 10 Pro
- Mi Note 10
- Mi Note 10 Lite
- Redmi Note 9T
- Redmi Note 9 Pro
- Redmi Note 9S
- Redmi Note 9
- Redmi Note 8 Pro
- Redmi 9
The first wave will commence sometime between April and May 2021. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has confirmed that second wave devices must wait until at least 'late Q2 2021' for MIUI 12.5, which realistically means June 2021. Presumably, other devices will receive MIUI 12.5 heading into the summer and autumn. By contrast, Xiaomi promised to roll out MIUI 12 to over forty devices across two rounds. Encouragingly, Xiaomi basically ignored the second round of its MIUI 12 release schedule last year, so more devices may find themselves in the second wave of MIUI 12.5 soon enough.
