Made by a solo indie dev, Metro Gravity takes the concept of gravity and flips it, allowing you to traverse on any surface, and mixes it with high-precision rhythm-based combat that forces you to move to the beat.
The map design reinforces this concept, having you explore a surreal, interconnected region that, in the developer's own words, "implies no up or down." Like any other Metroidvania, you explore, gain new abilities and powers, and solve puzzles to progress.
The game's retro-inspired 3D art style aims to capture the early vibe of the PlayStation 1 era with a hint of modern enhancements, such as real-time lighting and volumetric fog.
When it comes to combat, you are challenged to test your skill against a variety of foes. This is especially true in boss fights, which all come with their own unique soundtracks and force you to parry, dodge, and dish out attacks all on the beat of the music.
It's not all perfect. Some reviews on Steam point out a few design inconsistencies in the gameplay, and in general, the animation and visual effects seem to be the weakest part of the game, which is understandable.
The game was released on Steam earlier this week and already has a "Very Positive" rating with 98% of the 64 reviews so far, giving the game a thumbs up. It's also in the top 10 in the "New and Trending" section on the platform.
