Once Upon a Jester is a delightful adventure game with a musical twist, where players join the mischievous performer Jester and his best friend Sok on a quirky theatrical journey. Rather than focusing on battles or puzzles, the game centers on improvisation, creativity and the power of friendship. Jester and Sok dream of stealing the kingdom’s most precious diamond. To get into the royal castle, they quickly form a theater troupe and join a nationwide competition. But as their performances grow, they become more immersed in their roles – and begin to discover new sides of themselves on stage.
In each city, Jester and Sok stage a play they've written themselves. Players choose the genre – whether drama and romance or horror and comedy – the storyline, emotional tone and how it's brought to life on stage. The real challenge lies in keeping the audience engaged with fresh ideas, thinking on your feet and navigating the fragile dynamics of Jester and Sok’s friendship. Their bond shifts depending on choices made both during performances and behind the scenes. Trust can grow or fray, and misunderstandings shape their journey. To win the crowd’s applause, players must pay attention to the townsfolk – casual conversations reveal their tastes, moods and subtle clues that influence what resonates on stage. Listening carefully is key to stealing the show.
Reviews: Humorous and varied, but with a short playtime
The Nintendo-focused German online magazine ntower reviewed Once Upon a Jester on the Nintendo Switch (available on Amazon for around $300) and gave it a solid score of 8 out of 10. Testers praised the game’s witty, endearing characters – especially the charming friendship between Jester and Sok. The theatrical performances vary widely depending on the genre combinations, adding plenty of variety and replay value. The humor, which draws clear inspiration from Monty Python and South Park, also earned high marks. However, the game’s short playtime of just 3 to 4 hours was noted as a downside.
