A new update on the VKD3D-Proton for Linux has added support for Nvidia Reflex on Steam Play. This proprietary tech promises to reduce system latency by keeping the GPU and CPU in sync. So, the frames prepared by the processor don’t need to wait in the render queue, resulting in almost immediate rendering by the GPU.

VKD3D-Proton, a transition layer for Steam Play on Linux, has received an update. It adds support for Nvidia Reflex, which aims to lower system response times by allowing the GPU to render frames almost immediately after the CPU prepares them. In other words, it keeps the processor and the graphics in sync.

This means Steam Play on Linux could potentially offer a smoother overall experience. But the new VKD3D-Proton update isn’t just about the Nvidia Reflex tech. It brings a bunch of new additions too. That includes D3D12 Render Pass API, Shader Model 6.7 for compatible Vulkan drivers, and many performance optimizations.

The new VKD3D-Proton 2.12 update also fixes a good number of bugs, including fixes for GPU hang on NV in Unreal Engine 5 Lyra Demo and Warhammer: Darktide. You can check out the complete changelog from the image attached at the end.

All this is good news for the users of Steam Deck (available on Amazon). After all, these new additions in VKD3D-Proton allow the gaming handheld to take advantage of different techs within the industry.
