The dust has barely settled on the launch of the Raspberry Pi 500 Plus, a more premium version of the existing Raspberry Pi 500 (curr. $151 on Amazon) that doubles as a mechanical keyboard. Nonetheless, the company has announced a major new Raspberry Pi OS version, which has been accompanied by some bad news regarding ongoing single-board computer (SBC) pricing that we have covered separately.
Named Trixie after the Toy Story character of the same, the new OS release introduces numerous changes ranging from behind-the-scenes fixes to improved system management tools and a refined desktop experience. For instance, Trixie adopts a 64-bit time representation to allow system clocks to count beyond January 19, 2038. Theoretically, Raspberry Pi OS Trixie can now run without issue in this regard until the year 292,277,026,596.
Additionally, Trixie consolidates system settings into a new Control Centre application, thereby replacing Appearance, Mouse and Keyboard, Raspberry Pi Configuration and Screen Configuration. Better still, Control Centre supports third-party extensions and custom settings pages. On top of that, the new OS release groups desktop image components into meta-packages to simplify converting between Lite and desktop environments.
Moreover, Trixie introduces the Nunito Sans Light, updated wallpapers, a new desktop theme and a fresh set of icons. Please note that Raspberry Pi does not recommend directly upgrading a Bookworm image to Trixie. More details about Raspberry Pi's new OS release can be found on its website.
