OnePlus is following in the footsteps of Apple’s iPhone 16 (refurbished from $601 on Amazon) by equipping its upcoming smartphones with a programmable side-mounted button. This change will first apply to the OnePlus 13s, which is set to be unveiled on June 5. Just like on the iPhone 16, this button on OnePlus smartphones can be configured to mute the phone, open the camera app or activate many other features.
However, the most important function of the Plus Key is its integration with AI Plus Mind and Mind Space, which are OnePlus’ new artificially intelligence and corresponding AI app. If the Plus Key is set up accordingly, it will send information currently visible on the screen to Mind Space at the press of a button. Instead of merely saving a screenshot, the screen content will be analyzed in order to highlight and save things like appointments, products or locations.
This saved content can also be searched via OnePlus' voice assistant to quickly find appointments, among other things. These AI features are expected to become available soon on all OnePlus 13 series smartphones. On phones that don’t have the new Plus Key, content can be saved with a three-finger swipe gesture.
In addition to Mind Space, OnePlus has announced a few new AI features today. AI Best Face 2.0 can improve group photos where individuals are blinking or have an unsuitable facial expression, while AI Reframe can automatically crop images to make them "visually more appealing". Lastly, the Call Assistant can summarize and translate calls, and VoiceScribe transcribes phone calls, even on third-party apps such as WhatsApp or Zoom.
