OmniVision claims to have built on its initial 200MP image sensor breakthrough with a new product of the same class-leading resolution, yet potentially improved auto-focus and low-light performance. The new OVB0A also features pixels that the OEM touts as the world's smallest, so as to maximise light absorption in the new ultra-high-res CMOS.

Samsung has now launched multiple image sensors with the highest resolution known to devices such as smartphones. However, its main competitor in this arena OmniVision is keeping up with a new, second-gen 200MP product, the OVB0A.

The new top-end sensor is not the largest in the industry; in fact, at 1/1.395 inches, it is smaller than its predecessor the OVB0B. However, this newer model has OmniVision's 0.56µm pixels, the smallest known to mobile image technology.

Despite this achievement, this also does mean that the OVB0A's pixels and the wavelength of red light are incompatible - as even OmniVision itself concedes. However, it also claims that the sensor's "100%" quad phase detection (QPD) and quantum efficiency specs make up for that and ensure that its performance still matches that of the OVB0B when capturing the full visible light spectrum.

On the other hand, OmniVision also touts its latest 200MP component as capable of "the best low-light performance in its class".

Then again, the OEM also states that it will be the 4th quarter of 2022 at the earliest before manufacturers start working with its samples. Furthermore, as even the OVB0B has yet to debut in a new device, it may be yet longer before its successor also sees its first real-world use.
