After a period of speculation and scattered leaks, Anbernic has officially taken the wraps off its latest Android handheld, the RG 557. Shown in a new YouTube video posted earlier today, the device confirms several previously rumored details, including a 1080p AMOLED display.
The RG 557 sports a very similar design to its predecessor. The video showcases two color options - translucent purple and matte white. Both feature RGB-lit joysticks, which may be customizable, though that hasn’t been confirmed. The shoulder buttons appear stacked, and stereo speaker grills are clearly visible on the back of the shell.
The handheld comes with a 5.48-inch AMOLED screen that runs at 1920×1080 resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Touch input is also supported, and the interface shown in the video looks similar to the company’s RG front end used on past Android-based devices.
While earlier leaks pointed to the use of a Snapdragon G2 chipset, the official reveal of the RG 557 hasn't confirmed the processor (yet). However, performance shown in the video does suggest that it is capable of running demanding Android games like Honkai: Star Rail and Naraka: Bladepoint at high settings. Emulation demos included The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Wii U), Shadow of the Colossus (PS2), Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (PS2), and Borderlands 2 (Vita), some shown running at up to 4x resolution.
No pricing or release window has been shared yet, but with the hardware now officially out in the open, a detailed launch announcement with specs and other details shouldn't be too far off.
