MoaanFly colour e-reader features extra battery in cover, pressure-sensitive stylus support and Android

Depending on how you look at it, the MoaanFly could be considered either an Android-based e-reader or a tablet with an e-ink display. Since it runs on Android, users are essentially free to install additional applications, though not all of them are necessarily well-suited to an e-ink device. Whilst e-ink technology makes reading much easier on the eyes, it doesn’t offer impressive response times. For instance, video playback wouldn’t make much sense – at least not on the MoaanFly’s Kaleido 3 panel. The device comes preinstalled with Android 14 and includes Play Store access, eliminating the need to sideload apps. The concept of an Android e-ink tablet with stylus support isn’t entirely new, with devices like the Boox Note Air4 C already available for purchase (approximately $530 on Amazon).

The MoaanFly is powered by a Rockchip RK3756 SoC, paired with 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of internal storage. Its 7-inch panel boasts a resolution of 1,264 x 1,680 pixels, though pixel density is halved in colour mode. Both colour temperature and front light brightness are adjustable. The device supports stylus input with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. One notable feature is its dual-battery design: Besides a 1,200 mAh battery inside the tablet itself, the included charging cover is fitted with an integrated 1,950 mAh battery and connects via pogo pins. The device supports USB-C, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0.

As part of a Kickstarter campaign, the MoaanFly is currently available at an early-bird starting price of $299, with the official stylus offered as an optional add-on. Before making a purchase, potential backers should carefully review the shipping terms and any applicable import taxes and duties, and be aware of the risk inherent to crowdfunding projects.
