Massive 3D prints and multi-nozzle printing made possible by Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga
Most 3D printers released in the last few months have focused on print quality and innovative convenience-oriented features. However, with the new OrangeStorm Giga, recently launched through a KickStarter campaign, Elegoo has clearly taken a different direction, giving customers the option of a super-sized build volume in an economical, accessible printer.
Featuring a build volume of 800 x 800 x 1000 mm (or 640 litres), the OrangeStorm Giga is no compact desktop printer. It stands at 1377 mm tall and weighs 90 kg. The large build volume allows printing oversized models in one go, which would otherwise have to be broken up into smaller sections. Users can also leverage the large print bed by attaching up to 4 printing nozzles on the x-axis and simultaneously printing multiple copies of the same model. The nozzles can use different colours (but not types) of filaments.
The Giga isn’t just about size, though. Its maximum print speed is 300 mm/s, and it has a number of features including no-contact 121-point auto bed-levelling, automatic filament detection and power loss recovery, a detachable 7-inch HD capacitive screen as an interface and powerful cooling fans to enhance printing results. The 820 x 820 mm heated bed is divided into four sections, each with independent heating up to 90°C in as low as 17 minutes.
The upgraded 300°C nozzle is made of chrome zirconium copper and uses a full titanium alloy heat pipe. It also has PID auto-calibration functions for precise control of the nozzle temperature and the built-in acceleration sensors to calibrate for resonance compensation. It uses Elegoo’s Cura Slicer software, and can print from USB, LAN or WiFi.
The KickStarter campaign, which went live 3 days ago with a US$100,000 goal, has already met and crossed that goal, with over US$2.7 million already pledged and 56 more days to go. The OrangeStorm Giga is currently priced at US$1,500 for campaign backers, and will have an MSRP of US$2,500 after the campaign is over.
