AMD was supposed to unveil the RX 6700 XT at CES, but the company is still not sure how to market this GPU. Word on the street is that the current test samples can easily beat the RTX 3060 12 GB models from Nvidia, and it even bests the RTX 3060 Ti in select games. However, we might not get to see these cards launched sooner than May.

With the launch of the RTX 3060 Ti and the new RTX 3060 12 GB version, there is no denying that Nvidia is in firm control of the lower mid-range desktop gaming GPU market. We were hoping AMD would announce a competitive alternative at CES this year, but Team Red only hinted at some mid-range and low-end desktop GPUs coming in 1H21. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, AMD was supposed to allocate a significant part of the CES presentation for the Radeon RX 6700 XT announcement, but it seems that the company was still tweaking specs to make it as enticing as possible versus the RTX 3060 competition. Moore’s Law Is Dead also claims that, in its current test stages, the RX 6700 XT appears to easily beat the RTX 3060 12 GB, and the Youtuber further provides a list with the latest rumored specs.

The RX 6700 XT (Navi 22) is rumored to pack 40 compute units clocked at 2.35 - 2.5 GHz coupled with 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which appears to be as fast as the GDDR6 on the RX 6800 series. However, the memory bus is reduced to 192 bit and the Infinity Cache only comes with 96 MB. AIB versions should feature higher core frequencies and improved cooling, but there will also be reference models produced by AMD with lower prices close to the RTX 3060 Ti MSRP. TGPs could surpass 200 W, and, as far as raster performance goes, the RX 6700 XT may match and even surpass the RTX 3060 Ti in some cases.

Apparently, AMD is planning to release a laptop version for the RX 6700 XT and it may also want to market some cut-down desktop versions with 10 GB and 6 GB VRAM plus 155 W TGPs. Still, Moore’s Law is Dead points out that the cut-down versions might be a silly business decision, as Nvidia is already focusing on increasing the RTX 3070 availability. As of now, the RX 6700 XT launch date is rumored to occur in May, and hopefully AMD releases its DLSS alternative by then.
