Latest Nintendo Switch 2 release date window rumor sparks scheduling speculation

There have been plenty of Nintendo Switch 2 release date rumors lately, with earlier reports suggesting the console could be released in the first half of 2024 while more recent claims have focused on the second half of next year. A new date has been put forward courtesy of Nate the Hate in his latest podcast that also features MVG (ModernVintageGamer). It seems March 2024 was mentioned frequently at Gamescom in regard to the Switch successor, but as the channel host points out, the date “lacked specific context” beyond something to do with the Switch 2.

So, this means March 2024 could be the window for a teaser, an announcement, a reveal, or release. It’s worth remembering how Nintendo went about business with the original Switch console: It was teased as the “NX” in March and April 2016 before being announced officially as the Nintendo Switch in October 2016. Further major details, such as the price and specs, were revealed in January 2017 and the console was finally released in March 2017. That means a full year passed between the first teaser and the release date. There has been no official teaser for the Nintendo Switch 2 at the time of writing.

There is some hope that Nintendo might tease a next-generation console in September, maybe at the Tokyo Game Show, which would make March 2024 a more likely reveal date window rather than release date window (and just in time to excite investors at the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year). The Nintendo Switch 2 price and specs could be given a couple of months later with the device being released in 2H24 (September/October?). Not only does this give Nintendo more time to push OG Switch sales, but it would also explain why confirmable Switch 2 leaks are thin on the ground at the moment.

If March 2024 was being talked about as the Switch 2 release date window, then Nintendo should be offering solid details about the hybrid console very soon to engage public and media interest in the device and make sure that developers were up to speed in terms of launch title preparation. Although it could be theoretically possible for Nintendo to tease, announce, reveal and release the Switch 2 within a six-month period, there is no reason for the company to rush the process, so a March 2024 release date is certainly the more unlikely one out of these two possibilities.
