Intel Arc 140V laptops can consume 50 percent less power than the Radeon 890M while providing nearly the same gaming performance

The Lunar Lake architecture was designed with efficiency in mind and it really shows. Not only is battery life consistently longer than on previous generation models, power consumption is noticeably lower by significant margins as well under certain conditions. The most notable involves the integrated Arc 140V which has proven to be Intel's most competitive iGPU in years.

To show this, our charts below compare the HP EliteBook X G1a 14 AI to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 powered by the Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 375 and Core Ultra 7 258V, respectively. Both systems would return similar performance numbers on demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy XV, and Baldur's Gate 3 with a slight edge favoring the AMD machine on average. Most notably, however, the Intel-powered machine would draw just ~35 W compared to ~77 W on the AMD-powered machine when running the same title. The performance-per-watt advantage massively favors Intel even after accounting for any screen size or IPS/OLED display differences between the two models.

To end users, the higher performance-per-watt means Intel laptops can provide nearly the same gaming performance as an AMD alternative but with potentially longer battery life, quieter fan noise, and lighter or thinner designs.

A major reason for the wide power consumption delta between the Arc 140V and Radeon 890M relates to the processor as the 140V is paired to the slower Core Ultra 7 V-series while the 890M can only be found on Ryzen AI HX CPUs as of this writing. Even the Radeon 880M is only available on Ryzen AI 7 or Ryzen AI 9 platforms which are already faster and more demanding CPUs than the Core Ultra 7 V-series. In gaming environments where applications are more likely to be GPU bound than CPU bound, however, the slower Intel CPU matters little in most games as proven by our benchmarks.
