The government of India has announced that the country's 5G roll-out has officially begun. It projects that the services will reach their full coverage by 2024, and serve three-quarters of the nation's population. Then again, only one carrier has activated its 5G network thus far, and it works in eight cities.

Smartphone OEMs have been selling devices with 5G capabilities in India for years, regardless of whether the networks in question have been implemented or not. However, that is no longer the case, as the country's administration has officially declared the necessary infrastructure open.

This announcement has been made at the latest India Mobile Congress (IMC, running from October 1-4, 2022), amid other presentations and speeches that assert that the new connectivity will enhance commerce, emergency services and tech R&D within the country.

However, India's 5G proponents do also assert that devices with 5G mobile data can transfer data at up to 10 times the speed of 4G and serve up to 75% of the population. Then again, the roll-out will proceed in phases that will see its availability confined to the cities of Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Jamnagar, Siliguri, Lucknow, and Varanasi until the second one begins.

In addition, Reliance Jio has announced that its 5G network will not open until October 23, 2022, whereas BSNL projects it will not start offering services until August 2023 and Vodafone India does not even have that much of a concrete timeline.

Airtel, however, has announced that its 5G network is on from now, even if it is only active in Varanasi, Siliguri, Nagpur, Mumbai,Hyderabad,Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore for now.
