Honor Watch 5 Ultra Smartwatch Review: Ultra design with pretty normal functions

In titanium clothing.

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra is the company's first smartwatch with an Ultra suffix. The Watch 5 Ultra stands out with its octagonal titanium case and long battery life. Our review takes a look at what other functionality the smartwatch is capable of.

Verdict: The Honor Watch 5 Ultra lacks finesse

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra boasts sleek, stylish looks and impressive battery life. However, when it comes to its functionality, the "Ultra" label feels misleading, as there are not many features in addition to the standard fare.

ECG measurement and eSIM support are not yet included with our review sample, though these features are expected to be available once the watch goes on sale. It is a shame that the Watch 5 Ultra does not support message replies. The smartwatch would also benefit from wider app support.

During our time with the Watch 5 Ultra, we were impressed with its precise measurements, flawless workmanship, and good battery life, even if it does not reach the factory specification. That being said, the automatic workout recognition did not function and some translations in the app are inconsistent or awkward. The Watch 5 Ultra supports wireless charging using the Qi standard.

Overall, the Honor Watch 5 Ultra is a high-quality smartwatch that still needs some fine-tuning when it comes to the software experience.

Contrary to initial announcements, it appears that the Honor Watch 5 Ultra will probably not get an official Europe launch. Moreover, you need a beta app from Honor in order to use the smartwatch.

+ high-quality titanium housing
+ bright LTPO AMOLED display
+ wireless charging
+ usable battery life
+ exact measurement of body values

Cons

- no way to reply to messages
- no app store

- no payment function

Price and availability

At the time of writing, the Honor Watch 5 Ultra is not available in Germany. Although a European launch was initially planned, the smartwatch will only be sold in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Pacific, and Latin America.

The Honor store notes that the Watch 5 Ultra will be released soon, but we have not yet discovered it on known import sites. The recommended retail price of the Honor Watch 5 Ultra is €279.

The Honor Watch 4 had a Pro version, but there was no Ultra model. This year, the Honor Watch 5 Ultra emerges as the company's new spearhead for its smartwatch lineup.

It complements the previously released Watch 5 and is primarily characterized by its new design and the materials used.

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra is only available with 8 GB of memory and in two colors, Silver and Black. The straps differ depending on the case color. Our review unit comes in Black and with a black rubber strap.

The Watch 5 Ultra isn't available in retail at the time of testing, so we are using a beta version of the Honor Health app, which lacks some functionality. It is possible that the software features on offer may change with retail units.

Case and features: Distinct octagonal Grade 5 titanium housing

A standout feature of the Honor Watch 5 Ultra is its unique octagonal case design, which houses a round display. Another key aspect is the build material used — Honor uses a Grade 5 titanium alloy for the Watch 5 Ultra. The display is protected by sapphire glass for added durability.

The back of the smartwatch is made from glass fiber-reinforced plastic designed to mimic the appearance of ceramic. The Honor Watch 5 Ultra is equipped with a rotatable and pressable crown and an additional button on the side of the case. Both elements have a good pressure point and sit firmly. The crown is subtly highlighted with a red mark.

The glass surface sits flush with the case without protrusions or rotating bezels. The build is largely matte accented by some glossy areas. The Watch 5 Ultra is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. Honor indicates a 5 ATM water resistance for the smartwatch.

A speaker is integrated in the lower part of the case below the buttons, and a microphone is positioned on the opposite side.

The 22 mm wide straps can be changed without tools. The Watch 5 Ultra weighs 78.3 g with straps and 51.4 g without them.

Sustainability: Not much info available

Honor does not provide any information on the CO2 footprint, or the materials used in the making of the Watch 5 Ultra. Most of the packaging is made of cardboard, but there are also parts made of plastic.

Setup and operation: Honor Health Beta required for use

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra can be used with both Android and iOS devices. The smartwatch was not compatible with the current public release of the Honor Health app during testing, so we had to rely on the beta version. We paired the Watch 5 Ultra with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra running Android 15.

An Honor account is necessary in order to use the Honor Health app. The Honor Watch 5 Ultra is quickly detected and paired once the beta version is installed. Initially, the app requests personal data and preferences.

By default, some settings, such as automatic measurement of blood oxygen saturation and stress measurement are disabled. After setup, a brief tutorial appears on the smartwatch. Both the smartphone app and the software on the watch bear some clear resemblance to Huawei products' interface and layout.

The Honor app is divided into 4 sections: Health, Sport, Device, and Account. The Health section acts as a dashboard, showing key information on all areas such as activity, training sessions, sleep, and heart rate.

All completed workouts are listed under Sport. The Device page provides access to the settings of the paired smartwatch, where you can activate measurements and change watch faces.

Honor Health also includes music management, allowing music to be transferred from the paired smartphone to the smartwatch via Wi-Fi. It is also possible to customize the notifications for each app. There is no dedicated app store.

Collected data is listed under Account. Courses and training plans can also be set up and viewed.

A press on the crown opens the app overview while a long press leads to the power-off menu. Double-pressing is not supported. Rotating the crown scrolls through menus, and a vibration motor provides haptic feedback albeit with a time delay. From any menu, a single press on the crown takes you back to the watch face.

Pressing the lower button opens the sports menu and pressing it again in this menu selects a sport and initiates the training. Long or double tapping is not supported. The assignment of the lower button can be changed. Nearly all applications can be assigned in the settings.

Swiping from top to bottom reveals the quick access menu, and swiping from bottom to top opens the message menu. The usual smartwatch tiles can be called up with side swipe gestures.

Honor combines various information on one tile, such as the weather, moon phase, and air quality. Additional tiles can be created individually and organized in the preferred order.

Telephony and notifications: Message replies not possible

Thanks to the built-in speaker and microphone, it is possible to use the Watch 5 Ultra for calls. While the call quality is passable for short conversations, the built-in speaker is not particularly loud and distorts somewhat at maximum volume.

The eSIM option appears in the app overview of the smartwatch, but it is not included in the beta version of Honor Health. However, Honor has confirmed to us that the Watch 5 Ultra will have eSIM functionality in China.

Calls can be made using the watch face for manual dialing along with access to all contacts on the paired smartphone and call lists.

Messages appear consistently without delay or formatting issues. The smartwatch can display most emojis but not images. Messages are sorted by app in the notification center. If notifications pile up, on WhatsApp for example, the senders are no longer listed and instead a summary like "5 new messages in 3 chats" appears.

For emails, only the sender and subject are displayed; it is not possible to open longer mails.

The most significant limitation, however, is the inability to respond to messages directly from the smartwatch, not even with preset short replies.

Voice assistant: Not available on the Watch 5 Ultra

Although the Honor Watch 5 Ultra comes equipped with a speaker and microphone, there is no built-in voice assistant. The absence of an app store means that no corresponding voice assistant app can be installed.

Health and fitness: Honor with health scan and morning report

Health data is gathered using the Honor health app. In addition to measuring individual fitness parameters, the Watch 5 Ultra can also collect all parameters in one go; 'health scan', this is how Honor labels this feature.

The health scan takes 45 seconds and covers four points: heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, stress value, and weight. Please note that the user's weight is not measured as par of this procedure; the app uses a manually entered value instead.

If desired, the smartwatch can send reminders for regularly taking measurements and provides a morning report with the previous day's data. The generated report is more comprehensive, as it includes information on the weather, sleep, and heart rate ranges.

Activity targets: Goals denoted by familiar circles

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra uses ring-style indicators for tracking steps, calories, and activity duration. These goals can be set individually in the app. A timeline illustrates the daily routine by indicating when each goal was achieved.

Additionally, there are submenus for the individual points. This allows comparison of daily performance with that of other days, along with comparative values for weekly averages and other days or times.

However, the app does not provide information on altitude or flights of stairs climbed; only the smartwatch itself displays altitude data.

Heart rate, heart rhythm, and blood oxygen saturation

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra can monitor heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. The smartwatch should also be able to measure ECG as per Honor's official announcement, but we did not find this function enabled on our review sample yet.

In order to better assess heart rate values, we compare them with a reference device. We discuss the significance of these readings in a dedicated article.

The Polar H10 chest strap is used as a reference device to determine the heart rate while cycling. The resting heart rate values differ by just one beat per minute between the Watch 5 Ultra and the Polar H10. We measured the performance heart rate at three distinct intervals.

The Watch 5 Ultra performed remarkably well in this context, with an average variance of just 0.76% across the three measurement intervals. The maximum deviation for one measured value was 4 beats per minute.

Blood oxygen saturation readings were similarly quite reliable. A Braun Pulse oximeter 1 served as the reference device. The average difference between three measurements was only 0.01%, with a maximum deviation of 1% in a single measurement.

Sleep tracking: Watch 5 Ultra tracks various sleep phases

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra features sleep tracking capabilities. Users need to enable the extended measurement feature first, which then prompts the software to download a plug-in.

Even without the extension, however, the watch still displays different sleep phases, including duration and proportions for light, deep and REM sleep. Waking times were also reliably detected in the test. The software also provides a rating for the respective sleep phases.

The Watch 5 Ultra provides a comprehensive assessment of the user's sleep quality via a sleep score. This is given a value between 0 and 100, supplemented by a word score and an explanation. The app analyzes sleep trends and compares weekly patterns.

A sleep plan can be created to improve the sleep routine. The software also offers breathing exercises and sleep music. However, there is no smart alarm clock that takes the sleep phases into account.

The software can also recognize sleep sounds and speech during sleep. This requires the Watch 5 Ultra to be connected to a smartphone with internet access, as this recognition does not run via the watch itself.

Workout recording: Automatic training recognition needs fixing

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra can track over 100 sports activities with particular emphasis on its diving mode. The Watch 5 Ultra is said to withstand water depths of 40 m. Diving functionality was not tested in this review; we mainly used the product for jogging.

The training data collected is extensive and is presented in an easy-to-read manner. Goals can be defined for individual sports, including time, distance, or repetitions. When jogging, there is also a metronome, a function designed to burn fat quickly, and a virtual pacer that runs at a preset pace.

The Watch 5 Ultra can also provide information on the current training status, after every kilometer when running for example. The voice prompts, however, are only available in English at the time of testing.

The smartwatch is supposed to automatically recognize workouts in four sports, but this never worked during testing despite activating the function.

Post-workout, the Watch 5 Ultra assesses your exhaustion and suggests a recovery time. The software provides information on VO2Max levels and calculates a fitness age. Preloaded fitness programs are available on the smartwatch.

The fitness courses cover a wide range of training types. They not only cover muscle training for different parts of the body but also include stretching exercises.

GNSS and navigation: Return path navigation supported

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra can connect to satellites without needing any additional hardware. Unfortunately, Honor does not specify the exact GNSS systems supported. Moreover, GNSS data cannot be exported, making comparisons impossible at this point.

Navigation software is not installed on the smartwatch, but there is the option of way-back navigation during training. This means that the smartwatch guides you back along the route that was previously completed during training.

That being said, the routes cannot be exported nor is it possible to import GPX files.

Display: Bright LTPO AMOLED with AOD

Subpixel matrix
Subpixel matrix

The Honor Watch 5 Ultra stands out with its 1.5-inch AMOLED panel. A special feature is the built-in LTPO technology, which makes the refresh rate variable for longer battery run times.

In our measurements, the smartwatch achieves a maximum brightness of 1,265 cd/m² with the ambient brightness sensor activated. A maximum of 599 nits is possible without the sensor. These values put the Honor Watch 5 Ultra on par with the Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro. The Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and Apple Watch Series 9 are significantly brighter in comparison; either way, in everyday use, we had no problem with readability even in full sunshine.

The Honor smartwatch's display flickers at 60 Hz, which may cause discomfort for sensitive users. It also has an always-on display (AOD) feature that adapts to the selected watch face. It can also be activated by turning the wrist, although we felt this to be quite sluggish during testing.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 60 Hz

The display backlight flickers at 60 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 60 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8360 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Performance and runtimes: Honor provides limited specification details

Honor does not provide any information about the installed SiP in the Watch 5 Ultra. We also cannot run any benchmarks since no browser comes installed. The manufacturer specifies the internal storage as 8 GB, of which 3,638 MB is free.

The storage can be used for music and watch faces, for example. The performance of the smartwatch is fine for everyday use. However, there are minor lags when switching between tiles or opening apps.

Battery life: Watch 5 Ultra lasts a week

Honor advertises a battery life of up to 15 days. Actual battery life during testing was shorter than that. We enabled all tracking features and the always-on display and wore the watch continuously for 24 hours a day.

On training days, the battery capacity drops by around 20%. Because workouts were not conducted daily, the Watch 5 Ultra would typically last around a week before needing a recharge.

In terms of charging speeds, the smartwatch charges from 12% to 75% in 45 minutes, reaches 94% in one hour and fully charges in 70 minutes.

The Watch 5 Ultra uses Qi wireless charging. This works not only with the supplied charging cradle but also on the back of smartphones that support reverse wireless charging.
