The telecomms equipment maker Ericsson has become one of the latest in a growing group of companies that have decided against an appearance at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year. Like those others, it has cited prevention measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus to its employees or public as its reason for quitting the show.

Ericsson has announced that it has had to cancel its MWC 2020 appearance. Like other organizations that have reached this decision, it is doing so over potentially increased risks of the spread of the novel coronavirus, known as nCoV-2019, which has become associated with a progressing disease epidemic that has been fatal in some cases.

Therefore, Ericsson has dropped out of MWC 2020 due to a sense of "responsibility for the health and safety of employees, customers and other stakeholders". However, it has also stated that it has arranged a series of events closer to its own offices so as to approximate its contribution to the major tech event this year. They are to be called "Ericsson Unboxed".

This cancellation may be a particular blow to the GSMA's flagship event this year, as the participant in question attracts "thousands of visitors" to its installations per show day (according to Ericsson, at least). Other involuntary no-shows include ZTE and LG; however, a variety of OEMs such as Realme, Nokia, Sony and Xiaomi are still expected to present devices at the event.
