The hyper-gamer? Asus is making a completely fresh start with the G73; a new design, matt surfaces, an improved cooling system and a DirectX 11 capable graphics card (the HD 5870) all go to make up this 17.3-inch gaming hot-shot. We put the €1,400 machine to the test in our review.

Available for just under £1,650, ASUS's G73JH notebook isn't cheap, but you do get a lot of bang for your buck. The ability to run the latest games with little sacrifices in image quality is a huge boon, and ASUS's Republic of Gamers bundle - which includes a gaming mouse, a SteelSeries Siberia headset and a RoG backpack - makes it a complete mobile gaming solution.

Throughout testing, we found this laptop to be a pleasure to work with. It combines attractive looks and superior gaming performance with an ambitious price point that leaves the competitive offerings a little flat. Though we were surprised to find that Asus didn't bundle any movie player software for the Blu-ray drive, we're hoping the bundle will include that in future SKUs of the product. And battery life could be improved upon, along with perhaps an SSD option for the top of the line model. But in our opinion, this product is the sweet spot for enthusiasts who want the most laptop for their moolah, without having to take on a second mortgage.

The ASUS G73Jh is a high-performance notebook aimed primarily at hardcore gamers. Unlike most desktop replacement models, this gaming laptop is capable of competing with high-end PCs; not just in size, but also functionality. The Asus G73Jh is a gaming notebook for grown-ups and professionals: its drab, no-nonsense exterior hides an ultra-powerful machine capable of running high-end applications. In other words, the gaming notebook has finally matured.

While it doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as the Alienware M17x, the ASUS G73Jh-A2 delivers tremendous power—and good looks to match—for much, much less. With the G73Jh and its design inspired by the "legendary F-177 stealth plane," you'll have no trouble hunting down your enemies, according to Asus. The G73Jh is straight onto the podium of the best performance gamer laptops. It won't flinch faced with any game. High contrast and 1080p panel definition are real pluses, as is its ease of use and efficient fan. Whether you like the design or not will depend on your taste but we like its sobriety and the fact that it stays clean.

The short story is that while the G73Jh isn't without competition, it's easily the best bang for the buck among current gaming laptops. There are a few flaws like missing features—if you want FireWire, eSATA, USB3, or ExpressCard you'll need to go elsewhere. We also would have liked a Blu-ray combo drive, although it sounds like that will be available with other models (it should add ~$100 to the price).

Most gamers are used to paying top dollar for bleeding-edge parts and systems—with the downside of sacrificing precious power for any money they try to save by settling for older or less capable components. Gamers, take heed: In this model, Asus delivers one of the top-powered, top-value notebooks in its price range.

Advising whether or not you should buy this laptop is tricky – not least because Asus has supplied us with an arguably over-specced version. The 8GB of RAM and the pair of 500GB hard drives increase the price without adding much value. We also would have liked to see whether or not a dual-core Core i7-620M would have been a better bet for gaming too, as this CPU runs at a much higher frequency than the quad-core CPU Asus specified.

We had high expectations for Crysis, which remains the most resource intensive Windows game – even after three years. We cranked all settings to high on 1920x1080 and had no lag at all, although it lowered frame-rates to a level just about playable - but still higher than many gaming laptops we've seen. This means that the G73J can play games COD Modern Warfare 2 without even cocking an eyebrow. But, it also shows that it’s only human after all.

Matte-black and menacing, the design inspiration for Asus's G73 may be the technically invisible B-2 Stealth Bomber but this laptop is anything but subtle. It's big, eye-catching, the entire surface is rubberised and two enormous vents behind the screen glow a hellfire red, presumably making a visual reference to afterburners or something. If you're happy to pay the premium, it's absolutely the best choice for games right now.

All things considered, the impressions are very favourable. The G73J is the ultimate gaming machine, with no performance bottlenecks whatsoever, while remaining cool at all times. Although the suggested retail price of 1630€ is rather high, compared to other gaming notebooks, the G73J isn’t that expensive after all. The price-performance ratio is more than good, which means that the question isn’t really whether it’s worth it, but whether you can afford one.

When the G73Jw-A1 is closed, you can see how the matte black finish and a few strategically designed edges and angles remind us of a stealth fighter.

ASUS G73Jw: Out with the Old, In with the New

So let’s make it clear: when we first reviewed the G73Jh, we were very impressed with the features and performance, not to mention its great price for a high-end gaming notebook. Six months on and it still packs a punch—and the G73Jw revision doesn’t substantially alter the formula. If you disliked the stealth aesthetic, nothing has changed on that front.

Asus G73SW Sandy Bridge Gaming Notebook Review

A gaming notebook needs to exhibit certain qualities if it's to be taken seriously as a desktop replacement. Because of the limited upgrade path, especially in the GPU department, a mobile gaming PC needs to start off with a solid set of components, and the 17-inch G73SW gets more right than it does wrong.

Overall, the Asus G73SW offers good performance at a reasonable price. It isn't exactly svelte, but it isn't too much of a problem to carry around. The ASUS G73SW-A1 offers a strong combination of blazing-fast graphics performance, superb media playback, and stylish looks. The system's biggest drawback by far is its painfully stiff keyboard, which can make typing and gaming less comfortable than they should be. If you're willing to purchase a heavier system with a larger screen and better keyboard, you might want to consider Toshiba's Qosmio X505 series, which is now adding Intel 2nd Gen processors to its line. And if you don't want to spare any expense, the $3,300 configuration of the Alienware M17x, which features a 2.3-GHz Core i7 and 256GB SSD, is the best gaming system on the market. However, if you're looking for great gaming performance in a gorgeous package, the G73SW should be near the top of your list.

ASUS G73SW + SNB: Third Time’s the Charm?
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
One year later, the G73 is still kicking, but I have to say that I’m ready for something new. Familiarity may not be breeding contempt yet, but that love at first sight feeling is definitely fading. If you purchased the original G73JH, there’s no real reason to upgrade to the G73SW for games. For CPU-intensive applications, Sandy Bridge is still an awesome upgrade from Clarksfield, but I’ve seen other SNB designs that impress me more in some areas.

Price is a deterring factor here for many as 1.2 lacs is not a small amount. Also, a dedicated depth control button for the 3D would have been nice since not all games or videos work well at one setting. If you are in the market for the ultimate gaming notebook and have the budget then look no further, the G73JW should be right on the top of your list.

The Asus G73SW-BST6 has the graphics chops to handle the latest action games and the CPU horsepower to breeze through just about anything that you throw at it. Its battery life is relatively short, but chances are you won't be hauling this behemoth too far from an outlet anyway. A 1,920–by-1,080 display would be a huge improvement, as would the addition of a Blu-ray drive. The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) offers a more well-rounded feature set and better all-around performance, but it costs $900 more than the Asus G73SW-BST6.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870:

High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on a desktop HD5770. Models with GDDR5 are ideal but there may be a bottleneck due to the 128 Bit memory bus.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M:

High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on the GF106 chip using GDDR5 graphics memory (up to 1.5 GB).

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

520M:

The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

920XM: Fastest Core i7 laptop CPU in 2009 but with a TDP of 55 Watt it is pretty power hungry. Due to the Turbo Mode, the CPU can run with up to 3.2 GHz. Because of the Extreme tag, the multiplier is not locked, and therefore the CPU is easy to overclock.

740QM:

The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

4.03 kg:

Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.

85.23%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
