Since Google has tightened its software release schedule, Android 16 is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2025, so between April and June. Correspondingly, Google has now released the second public beta version that includes a number of new features. To be more exact, the second beta primarily focuses on the camera app.
The update makes it possible to save Ultra-HDR photos in the HEIC format, which is more efficient and needs less storage space. Finally, photographers also get the option to adjust exposure in automatic mode. Instead of choosing between fully automatic and manual mode, users can now adjust individual settings such as sensor sensitivity or shutter speed in automatic exposure mode if needed, while all other parameters are selected automatically.
Google is also introducing more options to adjust the white balance. In addition to adjusting the color temperature, the second beta of Android 16 allows to add a tint which can compensate for difficult or colorful lighting or create a more distinctive look. This is particularly important when shooting JPEGs instead of RAW pictures, because the white balance cannot be adjusted after the shot was taken.
Another new feature allows opening Google Wallet by double-pressing the power button. This is an alternative shortcut which usually opens the camera app. The new public Android 16 beta version is compatible with many recent Google devices, including the Pixel 6 and newer, but also the latest Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel Tablet. Prospective beta testers can register for the program on Google’s official website. As always, a full backup is strongly recommended before installing a beta version of any operating system.
