iPhones are thought to finally ditch the traditional triangular camera hump for a more Pixel-like camera-bar in the 17 Pro and Pro Max or its successors. Now, an intriguing new rumor asserts that the updated look might house a rear camera of 200 megapixels (MP) in resolution, as opposed to 48MP at most in the 16 Pro Max, one day.
The ultra-high-res sensor chosen by Apple comes courtesy of Sony, according to the leaker Fixed Focus Digital - which makes sense, as the 2 companies are long-standing supply chain partners.
The first-gen 200MP iPhone's alleged "Exmor T" sensor might have pixels of 0.8 microns (μm) in size and have 32-point PDAF.
It might also be capable of 4x lossless zoom, according to another prodigious tipster Digital Chat Station, thereby possibly filling the role of super-clear main shooter and telephoto lens at once.
The next-gen Sony sensor might be equivalent to one also showcased in March 2025 at the Boao Forum for Asia by Vivo, an Android OEM with much more experience in the use of 200MP sensors that has recently culminated in the release of its latest camera monster, the X200 Ultra.
Accordingly, that company just might be able to claim mastery over the new 200MP sensor long before it surfaces in a new iPhone.
On that note, the chances of the upgrade reaching the impending 17 Pro Max are slim to none at this point - although Apple does apparently have a 20th Anniversary Edition coming up.
