For months, multiple rumors have claimed that Apple plans to release a smartphone with a brand-new design to celebrate the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027. This device could feature a basically bezel-less display that’s gently curved on all four sides. In combination with a rounded frame and a glass back panel, the iPhone 19 Pro is supposed to look futuristic.
These previous reports suggested that both the Face ID module for facial recognition and the selfie camera would be invisibly integrated under the AMOLED panel in order to allow for a screen without a punch-hole. However, the analyst and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants now indicates that a "hole-free" iPhone could take significantly longer than expected. More specifically, Ross Young anticipates that Apple might be able to put at least some of the Face ID sensors under the display in 2026, which would make the pill-shaped cutout smaller, but it won't disappear entirely for the foreseeable future.
Purportedly, all sensors for 3D facial recognition could be hidden under the display by 2028. That said, Ross Young asserts that the selfie camera will still remain in a punch-hole until 2030, before Apple finally releases an iPhone without any cutouts for cameras or sensors. One reason for this delay could be the more or less lacking quality of under-display cameras, as illustrated by our review of the Nubia Z70 Ultra. As usual, such early rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, as Apple's plans can still change.
