The new iPad Air has offers improved battery life and a solid performance increase thanks to the new 64-bit A8X chip under its hood, prices starting at $499 USD.

Apple announced yesterday a new iPad Air tablet. iPad Air 2 is advertised by the official press release as "the thinnest, most powerful iPad ever" and features an updated Retina display, a powerful A8X processor, as well as Touch ID technology for secure access and easy, secure online purchases.

Apple iPad Air 2 has the following specs and features:

  • Processor: dual-core Apple A8X and M8 motion coprocessor
  • Memory/Storage: 2 GB RAM; 16 GB / 64 GB / 128 GB internal storage, no microSD
  • Display: 9.7-inch IPS LED backlit capacitive with 1,536X2,048 pixels and 264 ppi
  • Cameras: 1.2 MP front, 8 MP back with f/2.4
  • Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 ac, 4G LTE, Apple SIM, Bluetooth 4, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS
  • Operating system: Apple iOS 8
  • Autonomy: up to 10 hours of mixed use
  • Dimensions: 9.4X6.6X0.24 inches
  • Weight: 0.96 pounds WiFi only version, 0.98 pounds for WiFi+Cellular version

iPad Air 2 supports time lapse photography and also has HDR photo capabilities. While the last year's iPad Air can be purchased for $399 USD and up, the new iPad Air starts at $499 USD for the WiFi-only version with 16 GB of storage. The price of the 16 GB WiFi+Cellular model is $629 USD. In both cases, additional memory makes the tablet $100 USD more expensive.

The pre-order period starts today and first units should begin shipping next week.
