YouTube finally appears to be coming to Android Auto – but not in the way many had hoped. According to early user reports, the app offers audio only rather than video on the car’s display, and it also seems to require YouTube Premium.

Drivers have long been hoping that Google would finally bring YouTube to Android Auto. That now appears to be happening at last – but apparently not in the way many users had hoped. Many had expected to be able to watch YouTube videos on the car’s display, for example while waiting in a parked car. According to reports on Reddit, however, the new YouTube app seems to be audio-only.

Unlike the previously available YouTube Music app, the new app also lets users play regular YouTube videos in the car. However, no picture is shown, as playback is limited to audio only. That can still be useful, since many types of content – such as interviews, news programs, lectures or longer discussion videos – also work without visuals. Whether Google will eventually enable video playback remains unclear. One obvious reason against it is the risk of excessive distraction while driving. On the other hand, the app could theoretically be limited to use only when the engine is off.

One important detail: the Android Auto app appears to work only with an active YouTube Premium subscription. In the US, the individual plan currently costs $13.99 per month, with Google promoting YouTube Premium in part through its background playback feature. That function is likely to be especially important for in-car use. As Reddit users report, the app appears to be rolling out gradually to compatible devices. For many users, however, the feature is not yet available. Concrete details remain scarce, as Google has not officially announced the YouTube app for Android Auto so far.
