AR glasses with 120 Hz, 1,050-nit Micro-OLED displays that promise to offer some of the more exciting features of Apple Vision Pro at a drastically lower price – the Xreal Aura is now on sale, taking on the Meta VR Glasses.

The Xreal Aura AR glasses, developed in collaboration with Google, are finally available for pre-order, at least in the US. The smart glasses were originally unveiled in June, and can now be pre-ordered in the manufacturer's online store for $1,279, at least by customers in the US.

This price applies to the base model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash storage. Xreal charges $1,499 for the top model with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. Unlike the cheaper Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 ($379 on Amazon), the Xreal Aura feature integrated displays, with Xreal using Sony Micro-OLED panels with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a brightness of 1,050 nits.

Since the lenses are transparent, the surroundings remain visible even when the glasses are being worn. To reduce distractions, the lenses can be dimmed. Among other things, the displays allow videos, email or apps to be shown directly in the field of view, as well as up to five virtual monitors to be set up and positioned freely in the room. The glasses are controlled either by voice or by hand tracking, for which Xreal has built in two cameras.

Despite having displays, Xreal Aura weighs just 95 grams. However, to achieve this weight, the mainboard and the 34.8 Wh battery are housed in a separate puck that must be connected to the glasses via a cable. This puck houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite ARM chip that runs either Android XR or Meta Horizon OS. The Xreal Aura offers Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 for keyboards and controllers, a GPS module, a fingerprint sensor and four microphones.
