OLED screens are very popular amongst high-end premium multimedia and gaming laptops since there are big advantages in terms of display quality. This includes perfect black values for extreme contrast ratios, very crisp images and rich colors. You also get very fast response times. The German manufacturer XMG only offered its gaming laptops with IPS panels or Mini-LED screens (even though they also use IPS panels) so far. The new XMG Fusion 16 (M25) is now available with an optional OLED screen and we reviewed it.
XMG uses an OLED panel from Samsung with typical specs (2880 x 1800 pixels, 120 Hz). The subjective image quality is excellent and games in particular simply look a little bit better compared to matte IPS models. However, this brings us to the first drawback, because the OLED screen is glossy, even though we do not think many users will often play outdoors on their 16-inch gaming laptop.
If it comes to HDR contents, the OLED screen of the Fusion is not ideal. The maximum HDR brightness is just not very high at around 500 nits, which is typical for this generation of Samsung OLED screens. Still, the OLED panel offers a better image quality overall and the additional price of 130 Euros is justified. Picture editing is possible as well (both sRGB as well as P3 are covered), and we managed to improve the color accuracy with our own calibration. The corresponding profile can be downloaded for free in our review.
All in all, the optional OLED screen is a good addition for the lineup and we hope other models get OLED screens as well. Please see our review for more information about the new XMG Fusion 16 (M25).
