Windows 11: Microsoft confirms update problem with recent Insider Preview Build
Earlier this month, Microsoft introduced Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22593, a build that stated only included 'a handful of changes and improvements'. However, it turns out that the build has also prevented other Windows 11 updates from installing. According to Windows Latest, some installations report error code 0xc1900101 when Windows Update attempts to apply new updates.
Worse still, Windows 11 then rolls back to an earlier build without providing any explanation as to why it has done so. While this is not the first time that 0xc1900101 has affected an Insider Preview build, Build 22593 appears to have affected quite a few installations. Seemingly, Microsoft has received so much feedback about it that it has issued the following advice through the Feedback Hub:
- (Works on preview builds like Windows 11 Build 22593 only)
- Open File Explorer and navigate to system drive.
- Locate and open 'system32'.
- Remove SecretFilterAP.dll from system32 as it is a leftover from older builds.
- Reboot and check for updates again.
Microsoft stresses that you should remove SecretFilterAP.dll once you have tried other solutions. Apparently, ensuring that your machine has enough disk space to install an OS update may reduce the chance of error code 0xc1900101 occurring or updating to Build 22598 instead. For reference, this behaviour should not occur on the Release Preview Channel, which is currently receiving different builds from the Dev and Beta channels.
