Volvo hails its latest battery-powered HGV as a breakthrough in emission-free heavy-duty truck technology thanks to its potentially extended range.
The new FH Aero Electric is a 6x2 tractor trailer with an estimated range of 600km, as opposed to up to 300km in its 4x2 tractor predecessor. Its up to 780 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery is rated to be compatible with the emerging Megawatt Charging System (MCS) as well as up-to-350kW CCS.
Volvo projects that it will be able to charge from 20 to 80% in as little as 40 minutes, and carry up to 46 tonnes (~51 US tons), subject to local and regional restrictions.
The company originally planned to have the truck available to order in the second half of 2025, but has now revised that time-frame to start during the last quarter of the year.
The new FH Aero Electric is still backed to provide "a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2,” according to Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm.
