The Swedish carmaker Volvo has officially unveiled the latest generation of the XC70 long-range PHEV. With an output of 400 hp and an all-electric range of up to 125 miles, the vehicle is positioned as a powerful plug-in hybrid for longer journeys. Accordingly, the Volvo XC70 is designed to provide customers with a smooth transition from internal combustion engines to all-electric driving.
New Scalable Modular Architecture for the XC70
The XC70 is based on the new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) for plug-in hybrids. This particular platform tries to combine the efficiency of an electric drivetrain with the flexibility of an internal combustion engine. Thanks to the 21.2 kWh battery and a 1.5-liter turbo engine, Volvo claims that a total range of over 750 miles is possible without a stop. The active aerodynamics include a closable front grille shutter and vertical C-shaped taillights that not only shape the design but also reduce air resistance.
92-inch AR head-up display
Inside, Volvo focuses on tech like a 12.3-inch main display and a 15.4-inch infotainment screen that provide lots of space for navigation and other features. The highlight is a 92-inch augmented reality head-up display that projects key driving information directly into the driver's field of view. Safety features such as BLIS, City Safety, and Pilot Assist are also standard.
Production of the Volvo XC70 PHEV in China
According to Volvo, production of the XC70 Long Range PHEV is taking place in China. Whether and when the vehicle will be introduced in Europe and other markets is not clear just yet, but Volvo hinted at a later launch. With its latest EV, Volvo aims to continue its tradition of robust, versatile vehicles that also utilize modern electric and hybrid technologies to meet current demands in terms of range and efficiency.
