What began as a modest farming game has become the most-played title on Roblox – and currently outshines any game on Steam. Grow A Garden launched on March 25, 2025, and according to RoMonitorStats, it reached a staggering peak of over 5 million concurrent players on May 17. For context: even Counter-Strike 2 never surpassed 1.8 million concurrent players, according to SteamDB, while Dota 2 trails even further behind.
What’s especially remarkable is that Grow A Garden started as a solo project by a teenager and was built in just three days. Its rapid rise in popularity is likely driven by viral traction on TikTok and the low entry barriers on Roblox. In under two months, the game has racked up over 2.1 billion visits, with more than 1.17 million players adding it to their favorites. It also holds an impressive approval rating, with 93.6% positive votes.
Simple concept, massive impact
The gameplay is refreshingly simple: players plant flowers and vegetables, harvest them and sell their crops – the rarer the plant, the greater the profit. Alongside the familiar loop of collecting and upgrading, the game stands out with its laid-back co-op mode, growing pet companions and charmingly minimalist visuals.
Not without flaws
As massive as the hype may be, opinions are mixed. On Reddit, many players praise the game’s calming effect – which, combined with an addictive progression system and the ability for plants to grow while offline, is seen as a key factor in its success. Critics, however, point to its repetitive nature, question the possible use of bots and are puzzled by the popularity of a game that barely surpasses the complexity of a basic Tycoon clone. Some liken it to a stripped-down Stardew Valley, while others see the buzz as short-lived. Still, Grow A Garden proves that even the simplest concepts can become viral hits on Roblox. Whether it can stay at the top in the long run remains to be seen.
