Sony has announced that its eagerly anticipated Xperia 1 will go up for pre-order in the US tomorrow. As a bonus for pre-order customers, the company will also bundle its excellent WH-1000XM3 wireless noise-cancelling headphones with the phone making for a very appealing deal.

If you have been teetering on the edge of buying Sony’s flagship Xperia 1 smartphone, Sony has put together a tantalizing offer for US pre-order customers that might tip you over the edge. In making the announcement that the Xperia 1 will be available for pre-order in the US from June 28, the company has said it will also bundle a set of its critically acclaimed WH-1000XM3 headphones for pre-order customers. The XM3’s normally retail for US$350 which makes the US$950 price of entry for the Xperia 1 a little easier to stomach.

As someone who owns both the Xperia 1 and the WH1000XM3’s I can testify to their respective qualities. Although it takes a little adjusting to the 21:9 aspect ratio Xperia 1 4K OLED display makes watching movies an absolute treat for the eyes. Sony has partnered with Netflix to apply its CineAlta movie technology video playback optimized for its 4K OLED HDR display. When watching movies from Netflix a ‘Creator Mode’ is automatically launched, designed to provide a “faithful reproduction of the creator’s intended vision…with specially developed image processing compatible with the BT.2020 color gamut and 10-bit color of HDR specification.”

The WH-1000XM3s are generally considered to have topped the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II for the overall effectiveness of their noise-cancelling technologies and audio quality. I’ve found them to be an absolute dream to use on my daily train commute to the office as they effectively isolate outside noise and provide a detailed and expansive sound stage. Having them included as part of this bundle makes them a great pairing of Sony's audio and visual expertise. The use of near stock Android 9 Pie on the Xperia 1 with the latest June patch is also appealing as it ditches a lot of the bloatware you can find in skinned OS packages.

The Sony Xperia 1 pre-order period in the US starts June 28 and runs through July 12. As outlined, stumping up the US$950 for the Xperia 1 during the pre-order period will also land you a free set of Sony’s WH-1000XM3s that normally retail for an additional US$350. (Oh, if you're wondering, battery life is good, and the cameras the best on a Sony smartphone for some time -- look out for our full review of the Xperia 1 coming soon).
